East Patchogue neighborhood anyone?
Just out of curiousity, I begin this -
I've been reading a lot lately about demographics and different villages in Long Island. As I reconsider my past, I think back to East Patchogue where I was born and raised until the age of five - we lived off of Corbin, off of Sipp Ave (Exit 54). We "got out" as my parents put it and relocated to Three Village School District in Setauket.
Does anyone on here live around there or know about it and care to comment? Last time I drove by, there was graffiti on the white fence surrounding our old yard. Just driving by made me a bit teary-eyed - though long ago, I can still remember why my parents decided to move: One of my earliest memories is of our Supra being stolen; people tried stealing my dad's econoline work van; in the middle of the night some thugs tried to break into our house, etc.
What is living in East Patchogue like these days? I sometimes still question my family's moving into the more upscale and lush setauket/old field area, but I know we weren't the only ones to make the move in the mid-90's. Any thoughts are welcomed, thanks -
Jethro

The whole area is "transitioning" if it hasn't already transitioned. Patchogue used to be a place my parents took us shopping and to the movies in the 70's/early 80's to avoid the mall. Now it is a place where I saw a crime scene unit when I went to the Brickhouse a few years ago..there was a shooting right across the street. The gang presence all over LI is rising. It's not Compton, but it isn't the Patchogue of the 1950's either.

There are still good pockets of Patchouge, but Bellport has really started to take its toll on the village. It's not really an up and coming area and I wouldn't move there to start a family. Although, I have a good friend that is looking to do just that.
Ahh. I remember driving around Patchouge delivering the NY Times with my father years and years ago. Well, it's a different neighborhood now. Sad because it used to be such a charming little community.

My sister lives in East Patchogue still after like 27 years or so. She lives off an iffy street but around the other block from her some big houses were built. When I moved back to LI after a about 18 months in NC, I was looking at her area to buy a house because prices are cheap there. She is doing ok there but I must say she has been robbed quite a few times. Her yard is rigged for intruders with a buzzing sound and her garage is alarmed as is her house!

For those who may not be familiar with East Patchogue
The Hamlet of East Patchogue can be geographically confusing because East Patchogue is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address, and all places in the Hamlet of East Patchogue have a "Patchogue, NY 11772" mailing address.
For those who may not be familiar with East Patchogue:
East Patchogue is a hamlet (an unincorporated community) in the southwest part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the south-center part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of East Patchogue in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Medford; on the east by the Hamlet of North Bellport and the Village of Bellport; on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Village of Patchogue and the Hamlet of North Patchogue.
East Patchogue is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in East Patchogue have a "Patchogue, NY 11772" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Thanks, Walter, for pointing out that Patchogue and E. Patchogue are separate. People make big generalizations about "Patchogue" when, in fact, it's a place that pretty hard to generalize. I live in a house off of Roe Blvd, and my neighborhood is vastly different than someone who lives, say, in a duplex on S. Ocean or in a house off N. Dunton Ave.
I know a couple that lives south of S. Country, and they've never said anything bad about their neighborhood. They chose that part of E. Patchogue to be close to their church, which is located in Bellport Village (a place that was out of their price range).

I think a lot of it depends on which neighborhood you are referring to. Some sections are very nice. I myself like the neighborhoods off of South Country Road in both East Patchogue and Bellport. That area is very quiet and safe and there is a lovely village in Bellport. Some other sections are not that nice.

According to http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html , all of the Village of Bellport is in the Village of Bellport!

South Country Road around the vicinity of Station Road/Bellport Lane. It is not signed as Main Street in the village.
Interesting fact: South Country Road is part of the original routing of Route 27, before Sunrise Highway and parts of Montauk Highway were built.
