Default For those who may not be familiar with Setauket-East Setauket

For those who may not be familiar with Setauket-East Setauket:

Setauket-East Setauket is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northwest part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the center-north part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Village of Old Field, Conscience Bay and the Village of Poquott; on the east by the Village of Port Jefferson and the Hamlet of Port Jefferson Station; on the south by the Hamlet of Terryville and the Hamlet of Centereach; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Stony Brook.

The Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket has a different border than does the "East Setauket, NY 11733" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "East Setauket, NY 11733" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket and a place can have other than an "East Setauket, NY 11733" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket): places that have an "East Setauket, NY 11733" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket are in the Village of Poquott, the Village of Old Field and the Hamlet of Port Jefferson Station; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket with a "Stony Brook, NY 11790" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

To get to the OP's original post.....My husband and I lived in East Setauket for 14 years before retiring full-time to Naples, Florida three years ago. We both ABSOLUTELY loved living there as did our son, who was in the Three Village School District. In fact he just moved back to the area now that he's an adult. Naples weather is great in the winter, but even that doesn't make me for one minute not desperately wish I was back in the Setauket/Stony Brook area.

It is gorgeous in the summer, EVERYTHING you could ever ask for is in within minutes away from your home, crime is practically non-existant, Stony Brook University offers many, many things to the community to do, and without Stony Brook Hospital neither my husband nor I would be alive today. I still travel to the area for dental and medical care! Both are lacking here in "Paradise". That's what people in Naples call it here-HA! They obviously haven't lived in Setauket!

Yes, living here in FL I miss my family and my friends, but I can honestly say that I probably miss living in what is called the Three Village area (Setauket, Stony Brook, Old Field) more than anything else. I miss being able to walk in it's lovely parks, beautiful all four seasons, walking at nearby harbors and the beach, mulling around quaint Stony Brook Village, seeing everyone's summer gardens as I drive around, looking at the snow on the endless trees and hills, taking a stroll through nearby Port Jefferson...I could go on and on, but you get the picture. The first time I returned to Three Village (East Setauket) after being in FL for 9 months, I had a knot in my chest and tears in my eyes the entire day I was so emotional and deeply touched by how much I had come to love the area when I lived there and how much I missed out on by leaving it, most of all it's beauty.

The schools are rated excellent, the local library is great, every faith's church is there, highways are nearby, the mall is nearby, a golf course is there, the beach/playground is there, and everything is set in one of the most quaint areas of the US--right there on Long Island.

I've since rented a very small apartment right on Main Street in a 100 year old house on an annual basis and I lived there for 6 months last summer, visited this winter, and can't wait to get back for this summer--all even though I've got a big house with a pool here in Naples. And, we intend to "house hunt" while we're there this summer because we're moving back even if it means a smaller home!!! Yes, even with heating bills, high taxes and blizzards I can't wait to get "HOME". Sometimes leaving a place helps you to appreciate it, and believe me I highly recommend the area--no matter what your age.

Good luck with your decision!

The "Three Village" area -- it's really 2 villages and 2 hamlets -- includes the Village of Old Field, the Village of Poquott, the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket and the Hamlet of Stony Brook.
