Armed man in North Babylon standoff

BY CARL MACGOWAN | carl.macgowan@newsday.com 12:51 PM EDT, March 12, 2009 Suffolk police emergency units and several sheriff's deputies Thursday blocked off a section of a North Babylon street where an armed man is in a standoff with police.

North Babylon High School has been locked down since the standoff began late Thursday morning at a house on the western end of Deer Park Avenue.

A deputy at the scene said cars and pedestrians are being kept two blocks away from the house to keep them out of rifle range.

One witness said the man, whom police have not identified, was at a window yelling at officers.

They have North Babylon HS and Marion Vetter Elementary on lockdown --- they're not even releasing the kids at dismissal until the police activity is over.

I heard on 1010WINS that the guy was served with papers from the Sheriff's Dept and that's when it all started.

They went to serve some sort of warrant and he waved a gun at them and they called for backup - why the SCPD ESU and not the Sheriff's Office SWAT responded is beyond me - they certainly have their own SWAT type unit.

The Sheriffs office has a "SWAT type unit" for the jails only - because thats where they belong. Anything outside the jails, or off of Sunrise/E-Way is the jurisdiction of the SCPD - hence the deployment of the SCPD's Emergency Services Unit.
