Opinions on Selden and my situation...
I am looking for a home right around $250,000 (which allows me to put down 20%). I am also interested in school systems.
I was doing some research on Selden, any opinions? Highschools? I saw something about a middle school...
Good or bad? The prices are at least decent...

blue collar working class neighborhood. nothing special, safe and fairly quiet. schools are ok, nothing great, but i think if parents are involved they will do just fine. i think you get alot of house for the money in selden/centereach. there will be alot of neg replies i am sure. Just drive around and judge for yourself.

Ditto everything suzook said. Also, I hear their library is great. (I'm a nerd, what can I say?)
I prefer Selden to Centereach because the stretch of 25 east of Nicolls is less terrifying and/or aggravating than the part that's west of Nicolls.
EXCEPT: Well, if you can afford S. Setauket (which is Centereach). That'll get you into the Three Village School District, which will help your re-sale value.

Yep, there are some houses in S. Setauket listed for 299K..I'm sure they can be had for well below that if you wait them out..better district, better upside on the resale value.

Selden isn't a bad place; when I was in school there was a guy that called himself the Selden savage (think Jay from Clerks).
On the other hand, my wife went to Newfield HS and went on to get her PhD.

I grew up in Selden (and my family still lives there). Its a nice and safe town - very middle class. Like everyone else has said, nothing overly special about it. Depending on where you live in Selden, you may go to Dawnwood MS/Centereach HS or Selden MS/Newfield HS. Both are good. I went to Selden MS/Newfield HS. The teachers are very good and care about their students.
If it wasn't so far from my job, I'd consider buying a house there.

Not bad.
If you can spring for So Setauket do it.
I would also check out Miller Place, Sound Beach, Rocky Point and Ridge.

For those who may not be familiar with Selden
For those who may not be familiar with Selden:
Selden is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the west part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the center part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Selden in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Terryville; on the east the Hamlet of Coram; on the south by the Hamlet of Farmingville; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Centereach.
The Hamlet of Selden has a different border than does the "Selden, NY 11784" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Selden, NY 11784" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Selden and a place can have other than a "Selden, NY 11784" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Selden): places that have a "Selden, NY 11784" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Selden are in the Hamlet of Farmingville and in the Hamlet of Coram; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Selden with a "Centereach, NY 11720" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

They don't call it Skelldon for nothing. Look elsewhere.
