There are good neighborhoods there. I don't know what section, but recently a body was found in a dumpster in VS. The area around Green Acres Mall has a really bad reputation, including the mall. One kid walking home from school was robbed at gunpoint.

I cannot challenge or support these observations. I never brought Valley Stream into the dialogue. Frankly, I never cared for Valley Stream, it is entirely too blue collar and pedestrian for my tastes. Rosedale, Green Acres and et al.

I do not consider Staten Island to be the be all and end all of nice homes to be envied by anyone on Long Island. Most homes are semi attached and not that nice at all, with postage stamp sized yards.
Food for thought: Maybe you get a bigger home on SI than on LI because the land is cheaper as SI used to be a garbage dump? In fact the reverse is true, though you pay less taxes on Staten Island.
At any rate, my observations of LI are based on facts. Please share them with us all, so we can all be educated.
Thank you for your military service.

I did so before I knew you, had I known you and your ilk would vote for the Self anointed one! I may have gone to Canada.
WE New Yorkers and especially Long Islanders, have been fed so much crap for long we believe it's steak. Wake up folks, you are being treated like cattle led to the slaughter and you provide the butcher's the blade!!!!! Cut the crap about all we have available to us for entertainment, dining, beaches and so on. 10 years ago, we would go to b'way 6 times a year... Have you priced recent tickets?
I owned a 4 seat season box at Yankee Stadium, 1st base side 10 rows up from the dug out for $2k a season... Now its nearly $10k.
Getting into the Bronx zoo is now $10 per.
Get real folks, The NYc area great as it once was, is growing to become a great tax and spend community. This will only serve teachers who from recent Newspaper reports are averaging $150k a year for working 180 days a year!!!!!!!!!As written about in Newsday of April 19th, 2009. I'm frankly sick of reading about all of these ne'er do wells who work a gazzillion hours a week to teach our children in a mediocre fashion and claim they have all of these credentials. Bulls--T!
I have a Masters In Electrical Engineering From Cooper Union1970. upon Graduation, there was no need to feather my nest to build my income through lame educational courses which haven't proved of real value in the class room. My skills in the real workplace provided the impetus for my income to grow. I performed, my results were measurable and thereby I was compensated accordingly and thus succeeded up the ranks and income.
So I once loved L.I., I dwindled less loving L.I. less so, and now I cannot wait until my Moving day of May 27th OFF L.I.
$13k a year in taxes for what????? Plus $9k year in heat and Electric.
If you stay, consider yourselves lemmings , led to the ocean

As for South Hempstead (the Baldwin portion) being a "white Enclave", please provide me with the source of the peyote you're smoking.
South Hempstead begins from the west side of Grand Avenue at Weber Ave. and South of the Parkway. Have you spent anytime driving into the Coes Neck park area? or, across DeMott east to west? Or from Carl Ave to Centennial Ave? You cannot see a significant cosmetic difference between it and Hempstead to the North.
The areas noted are either in various stages of disrepair or on the verge of becoming so. Home values in this area are substantially below the rest of Baldwin and Baldwin Harbor.
Proportionately, Staten Island has the largest percentage of Fire and Police folks residing and their homes show it, unlike the "bungalows" you refer to.
Simply stated and unafraid to be labeled, Beautiful Baldwin is no longer. Its beauty is diminishing to all who experienced its past. To the "newcomers" of color or otherwise, it is a marked improvement from their prior existance. Though they too will suffer inevitably from the blight that they bring when their brethren follow uninvited or otherwise behind them.
Lets be honest here and stop the PC Lets call it as it is.
Label me as you wish, if you need to. Though labels don't change the facts as they are.

Wow, I thought I replied to this post last week....maybe it got deleted?
#1) You are completely wrong about the location of South Hempstead. What you're referring to is entirely in Baldwin, and no one "calls" this part of Baldwin "South Hempstead" either. The only thing I could imagine would possibly bring someone to believe this area is South Hempstead is if they got off the SSP one time in their life and noticed the green "South Hempstead" sign on the west side of Grand Avenue.
#2) South Hempstead is overwhelmingly white. Residents in this neighborhood send their children to RVC schools, it's a fairly desirable middle class area. There are also a minuscule number of homes zoned for Uniondale on the hamlets northwest end.
#3) I used to be in Baldwin every day, but I haven't been there much over the last 3 years. When I read your post, I was amazed that you singled out what I remembered as being some of the nicest blocks in that area (save for the immediate vicinity of Coes Neck Park, which is not too hot). So last week, stuck in traffic eastbound on the Southern State, I decided to hop off on Exit 20 and do a little tour of this area to see if it had gone down the tubes.
What I found was shocking: you are completely, and utterly, effing bonkers. I would love to know what it is exactly that is so terrifying about DeMott, Centennial and Carl. I saw nothing but pristine homes, finely manicured lawns, large well-maintained pre-war homes and tall shady trees. Exactly as I remembered...and generally much nicer than the vast majority of neighborhoods I've been through on LI (and I've been through almost all of them). What's even more strange about your "observation" is that you could go less than a 1/2 mile south and find much worse blocks to point out... is it possible these are the only three streets you've ever BEEN ON in Baldwin? Cuz that's what it sounds like to me..... No difference from Hempstead? From HEMPSTEAD??? Forget peyote, you're smoking PCP if you can't tell one side of the parkway from the other.
#4) Good luck moving. Hopefully it's somewhere far, far away from LI where they don't have internet access. I'm sure your new neighbors will be regaled by your smug elitist "I served in the US Coast Guard to PROTECT YOUR WAY OF LIFE" BS. It's communist China here on the vile-isle, baby. All these blacks makin' money, living in nice houses in Baldwin and you can't pay the taxes? Don't let the door hit your ass on the Verrazano bridge!

I sold my 3br 1ba built in 1930 on a 50x100 lot for more than I bought this home for This home is 3yo 6br 5ba and the taxes are 1/4 of that in Baldwin. Car insurance and utilities are 1/2 of what I was paying. Throw in gas, food, etc and I'm actually saving money every month. The schools are great and the neighbors are even better, I'm so glad to be off the Island

Hey Mike, thanks for stepping up. I saw the light a year ago and in a matter of days, I too will be leaving the land of lemmings and apologists. Let's hope the Hudson river widens and bridge tolls continue to rise, to keep these saddly misguided myopic lemmings on Long Island.
