cheapest place to live (on LI)
I always hear people around here on Long Island (and on these forums) that the cost of living on Long Island is ridiculously high. This is mainly due to the high property taxes. In my opinion, its cheaper to rent a room for about $430 a month rather than buying a home. I live in the Stony Brook/Setauket area, which is pretty expensive.
So my question is, which town on Long Island has the lowest cost of living?

Wyndanch? Brentwood? Hempstead? Roosevelt? Unless you factor in emergency room co-pays for gunshot wounds, you can't beat the cost of living in these towns.

Taxes lower? They are off the charts in Freeport. Those added on "village taxes" make sure of that.

If you buy an older house the taxes can be very cheap. My mom's house in the Half Hollow Hills School District has taxes of $1200 a year.
Oldies are goodies!

Also try Central Islip.... its got a mexican influence to it but it seems less expensive.
If you see Dollar stores and "Compare Foods" grocery store then you should check that area out.

My guess is you're looking at her "net" taxes - after basic STAR (or Enhanced STAR?) and exemptions. If that's the case, only basic STAR would apply to the next owner...
For example, I know a senior whose "true" taxes are over $13,000/yr, but after various exemptions, she is paying just over $5,000/yr.

You're right Elke, new owners according to Zillow are paying $3,100.
