I have an opportunity to work in Westbury, which would require a relocation. I’ve heard about the traffic, the taxes and the home prices on Long Island, but figure I’ll ask the questions to see whether I should take this opportunity seriously. Here’s my bullet list:

--Looking to buy, at least 3BR and 2BA, budget is around $500K.
--Have kids, one getting toward high school age and the other in elementary, so good schools are a must.
-- I am used to driving a lot of miles, but don’t want to be stuck in the car for much more than two hours each day. Mass transit to Westbury is OK if that's a realistic option.
--Any suggested towns should also be near mass transit to NYC. I figure this would increase my radius in case this opportunity is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Of course, if this is the impossible dream feel free to tell me that as well. I’ve got a few irons in the fire and am in the due diligence phase so it wouldn’t really break my heart.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can find a home on LI for under 500K. Taxes are high. I live in Bayshore and I hear the schools are good. I don't have kids but you can find this info on line. There are homes for sale in Bayshore for even less than $400K. Yes, with 3 BR & 2Ba. It's right off the Southern State so you can drive west to Westbury (we have family there). There are two LIRR stations you can take; Bayshore or Deer Park. Bayshore parking is tiny but the Deer Park parking lot is huge and free. The buses do not have a great schedule, so you need a car to get to the train. I hope this helps. Good Luck!
