I wouldnt buy a home without a basement. A finshed basement can double the livable square footage of a home and is a major plus for resale value.
Just my 2 cents.

A basement is also a nice luxury to have on those cold damp days (like today) where on a slab the cold goes right through you.

Another thing to consider about Hicksville (and surrounding towns) is it is a growing Asian, East Indian population. I am not implying this is a bad thing but something not everyone might be comfortable with.

Moved out of parent's from Plainview into Hicksville with my wife back in '02. It is still a good choice given the much higher taxes of the surrounding towns. We're down by Holy Trinity High School and have not had any bad experiences whatsoever. Proximity to the railroad and mall is perfect... just far enough, but not too far every morning. There are lesser areas of the town which has a very industrial feel to it near Grumman, but it feels very much like a Plainview by us, except we obviously have smaller houses and no basements. I really don't mind not having a basement even though I grew up with one... less upkeep and with just the two of us, space in the Levitt house has not been an issue. Now that we have 2 infants we're looking to move into a town like Syosset or Plainview / Old Bethpage where schools are statistically better (graduation / college rates) as well as get into a bigger home. The toys are just overflowing right now. The downside of course are the annual taxes... just under double.

I would also add that while the demographics are increasingly becoming indian with many restaurants/stores on broadway, I don't have a single Indian neighbor... the only "minorities" seem to be us and the family across the street both being asian (chinese)... everyone else is caucasian (and friendly).

As for illegals and the area around the train station - you may only be affected by the negativity if you live near there. We don't have any problems way down here, and don't even see any issues driving the 1.5mi. there everyday.

Hicksville is nice. Good restaurants, Broadway Mall, big train station and good schools.

Just South of Old Country Rd and on either side of Levittown Parkway.

I have lived in Hicksville for the past 12 years. We are just north of Levittown and in between Newbridge and Jerusalem.

The majority of this subdivision, is made up of whites but as some others have mentioned, you are seeing somewhat more Indians (Asians) in the area (although tend to be more on the east side of Broadway). All the Indian families I know, are American-ized, keep their homes nice and are generally friendly.

On my block in particular, 90% is white (caucasian) - one Indian family, one black family, one Pakastani family, two or three Asain families and one Spanish family. We have block parties every year and their are lots of kids out playing.

I really enjoy not only my neighbors, but also the location. We are close to just about every major highway/parkway, have use of a variety of town pools, have access to Tobay beach (next to Jones beach), and are near easy shopping. I despise going to the Roosevelt Field area and try to stay away from there because of the traffic. Therefore, I appreciate having lots of food shopping choices, large merchant options (Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Kohl's etc.), small stores in a strip mall (Plainview So. Oyster Bay Rd.) and a smaller mall (Broadway Mall) with 10 minutes tops from my home.

The schools have all been good and they are what you make of them. There are lots of extra-curricular activities for students from elementary thru the high school to participate in. Extra help in school has always been made readily available, if and when we needed.

The high school is large and kids can get "lost" but as long as they have a good foundation and take part in offered clubs, sports, extra-curr. - they will do fine. The Robotics club the high school offers is one of the best in the country. Everyone I have known who has graduated from Hicksville High have all gone on to good colleges.

If you have any other questions, I would gladly answer them..

I grew up in that neighborhood (just north of Spindle Rd). Glad to hear it's still the same. Don't know what I would have done without the Levittown pools (until 15 years old) and then Tobay Beach, which is a real gem.
Went back to visit an old friend still in the area. Good to see kids riding bicycles in the street and playing ball - do not see that out here in NW Suffolk county as much.
