For those who may not be familiar with Hicksville
NYsurviver, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.
For those who may not be familiar with Hicksville:
Hicksville is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center-west part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east-central part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/North Hempstead/Hempstead town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Hicksville in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Jericho and the Hamlet of Syosset; on the east by the Hamlet of Plainview and the Hamlet of Bethpage; on the south by the Hamlet of Levittown in the Town of Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line); and, on the west by the Hamlet of Salisbury in the Town of Hempstead and the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead/North Hempstead town line).
The Hamlet of Hicksville has a different border than does the "Hicksville, NY 11801" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Hicksville and a place can be in the Hamlet of Hicksville and have other than a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address): places with a "Hicksville, NY 11801" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Hicksville are in the Hamlet of Jericho; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Hicksville that have a "Bethpage, NY 11714", "Jericho, NY 11753" and "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Thanks, Walter Greenspan. We just moved from other state, so we are not actually quite familiar with the long island. We choose hicksville because of its convenience and low taxes. But we saw a lot of houses without basement. So we are not sure about the location...

living in Hicksville
I have lived in Hicksville for the past 19 years and grew up about 3 blocks from Hicksville in Jericho. I have 4 children, with the last graduating this spring, that went from grade school thru high school in the public schools. The schools have been great for my children, offering many sports and after school activities as well as college credit courses. The teachers seem to be on top of the students with letters and calls home when needed.
I live near the middle school, nice older area with different styles of houses. Houses in the "A" and "B" sections are newer houses [built in 50's and 60's] that are "Levitt" style houses. These are the houses with out basements, built on concrete slabs.
The area around the Broadway, formerly Mid Island, mall is very congested with smaller houses and small yards without alot of parking available.
This seems to be the area with more problems than others.
Everything is close, shopping, trains, hospitals, but the price you have to pay is the traffic. Most of the time its ok but rush hour is a trying time.
Overall a good middle class area, in my opinion.

A lot of homes in that area and surrounding towns don't have basements. It is not uncommon on Long Island to not have a basement. Depends on how much of a priority they are. You need to watch out for basements in some LI areas due to flooding issues. They are not always ideal.

What's interesting is that the same people who criticize houses with no basement on LI -- horrors! -- will have no problem purchasing homes with no basements in Mecca, NC, Rebel, SC, or Swampland, FL no questions asked.

Thank you all. We've been looking a lot of houses in section A and B areas--very nice neighbourhood. I have no problem without the basement at all. But people keep telling me that the house without basement is built cheaper. So....

It makes sense it would be a little cheaper. It costs more money to dig out a basement. A home with no basement does not mean inferior construction...it just has no basement.
