Yea you will love it I am sure. I think NY is the greatest city in the country and not only because I live here.

Default location and commute

One thing I need to consider is where I'll need to drive. Although my office will be in Hauppauge, I often will need to visit places in both Suffolk and Nassau Counties. If we were to locate more centrally in western Suffolk or eastern Nassau, how would the eastward commute be to Hauggpauge? I'd be going against the rush-hour main direction, but I imagine it might still be a pain. I've read somewhere else that Hauppauge gets lots of traffic all the time.

Hauppauge does have a lot of traffic. It's worst around where Town Line Road/Route 111/347/Vets all meet, and also Motor Parkway gets packed on the Afternoon Rush. Coming from slightly West is definitely better than from the East. Apartments in Hauppauge tend to be more expensive than those a few towns over, because so many people work there.

Default towns west of Hauppauge

Thanks for the info. What towns would be best for apartment shopping among Commack, Elwood, Dix Hills, Half Hollow Hills, Deer Park and Melville?

HH Hills and Elwood are school districts not towns, the areas are all fine for the most part, although many apartments will be in peoples house and Illegal". There are some raunchy areas of Deer Park and Half Hollow Hills. Just drive around the area before you commit to anything.

While colloquially referred to as "towns", Commack is a hamlet partly in the Town of Smithtown and partly in the Town of Huntington; Elwood, Dix Hills and Melville are hamlets in the Town of Huntington; and, Deer Park is a hamlet in the Town of Babylon.

Half Hollow Hills is a Central School District, and includes within its borders all or parts of the Hamlets of Dix Hills and Melville.

If you're talking strictly "apartment" as opposed to "whole house", Commack and Deer Park have the biggest selection. The other areas don't have as many apartments available.
As far as "whole houses", they're all pretty much the same, with the highest priced ones currently available in Melville (although they have the lower end as well).
