Seeking apartment in/near Hauppauge
We are a couple in our 40s with no kids and a small dog. We are moving from Colorado and know very little about Suffolk Co. We want a community that is safe, quiet, affordable (so far we have one salary in low 60s), and easily accessible to Hauppauge. A bonus would be locating close to opportunities to enjoy the arts and nature. We sure would appreciate your suggestions.

There are Fairhaven apartments (spelling?) in Happauge itself. It is off of a main road (Veterans Highway), but immediately north is Blydenburgh town park preserve, as well as Caleb Smith (spelling) preserve. Since Hauppauge is your commute you might want to look around the Port Jeff/Stony BRook village area further east as it pertains to nature, some arts access. Formal rental properties would be harder to come by but there might be options. To the south shore is Sayville which would be about 25 minute commute, maybe less in rush hour. Good luck in your search.

Be aware that a one bedroom apartment in a garden apartment complex is going to run you $1100 and up, so low 60's is borderline to move here..hopefully you'll be able to get up in the 100K range combined to live comfortably. Long Island is expensive.
There are a number of garden apartment complexes in Hauppauge, but they are priced higher than others in towns slightly east. Long Island is ok on parks (caleb Smith, Blydenburgh are close, Connetquot State isn't far, Bayard Cutting is nice too)..a bit weak on the arts.

Third, for those who may not be familiar with Hauppauge
Mark GA, first, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.
Second, for a look-see at "things-to-do", here are two sites that offer weekly eMail newsletters: LongIsland.com and About Long Island NY, and, here's what could be the best site: Long Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission.
Third, for those who may not be familiar with Hauppauge:
Hauppauge is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the south part of the Town of Smithtown and partly in the north part of the Town of Islip, in the west part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Hauppauge partly in the Town of Smithtown and partly in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Smithtown and the Hamlet of Nesconset in the Town of Smithtown; on the east by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma and the Village of Islandia in the Town of Islip; on the south by the Village of Islandia and the Hamlet of Central Islip in the Town of Islip; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Commack in the Town of Smithtown.
The Hamlet of Hauppauge has a different border than does the "Hauppauge, NY 11788" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Hauppauge and a place can have other than a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Hauppauge): places that have a "Hauppauge, NY 11788" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Hauppauge are in the Hamlet of Smithtown and the Village of Islandia; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Hauppauge with a "Smithtown, NY 11787" and "Central Islip, NY 11722" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Welcome to Suffolk....
Some of the apartments I know in that area are Devonshire, Stratford Greens, Colony Park.... not all are in Hauppague, but within a 10-15 mins drive.
The rents will run into the 1200-1400 for a 1 bedroom apt. with a 1 month security deposit.

The Staller Center at SUNY in Stony Brook would probably be the closest venue for the arts. They have classical, jazz, theater, headliner names, etc. Also a 2-week film festival during the summertime. And films run during the year also. From Hauppauge it's about a 20 minute ride.
And in the other direction is Huntington Village (a hamlet - see Walter, I'm learning) with IMAC featuring all music (jazz, vocalists, etc.), Cinema Arts Center that runs offbeat films 364 days/year, concerts at Heckscher Park in the summer, etc. Again, another 20 minute ride from Hauppauge.
Hope this helps.

You will also be a train ride away from NYC and all the arts you could ever want.

That's something to look forward to. When we lived in the Twin Cities, the best jazz shows were there on weeknights because Chicago had them on the weekends. And now we are in southern Colorado with a four-hour drive to Denver. The 90-minute train ride to Manhattan will be a new experience.
