Another NEWSDAY geographic goof, "Thousands welcome troops home in Garden City"
Another example of NEWSDAY mistaking the community name in a place's mailing address for the community in which that place is located:
Thousands welcome troops home in Garden City
In the second paragraph, the article states, " ... troops with the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment returned to a hero's welcome at the Marine Reserve Training Center in Garden City."
Located at 605 Stewart Avenue, the Marine Reserve Training Center is in East Garden City ("Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address).
In other words, if you want to send a letter to the Marine Reserve Training Center, you would address this letter to "Garden City, NY 11530"; however, if you want to actually go to the Marine Reserve Training Center, you would go to East Garden City.
It is important to understand that East Garden City is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name as part of their mailing address.
For those who may not be familiar with East Garden City:
East Garden City is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast part of the Town of Hempstead, in the central part of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of East Garden City in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Carle Place and the Village of Westbury in the Town of North Hempstead (the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of East Meadow; on the south by the Hamlet of Uniondale and the Village of Hempstead; and, on the west by the Village of Hempstead and the Village of Garden City.
It is important to understand that East Garden City is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of East Garden City have a "Garden City, NY 11530", "Westbury, NY 11590", "Uniondale, NY 11553" and "Hempstead, NY 11550" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Walter,
You must lead a very boring and miserable life if the only thing you take from a story like this is that the location is EAST Garden City as opposed to Garden City.
Why don't you write to NEWSDAY and let them know about each and every geographical, typographical, etc that they make. Maybe you'll feel better.

I'm sure those troops families can rest easily now that they know they were in east garden city, and not garden city.

So, you're saying that the center is in Garden City, but because a few people in the area have decided to call themselves "East Garden City," we should all be up in arms over it? Ok, ummmm they are right because the zipcode is 11530 and that is Garden City.

Personally, I respect Walter's crusade for geographic accuracy. However, in this case, I salute our heros no matter where they landed.

"Geographic Accuracy"...... however, does it really matter to a murder victim's family, a carjacking victim, or families of troops who are finally home??? No, it doesn't and it's extemely rude and arrogant to point out something as insignificant as an "east", "west", "north", or "south" tag when talking about an important news story.

On the official map of Nassau County as published by the Nassau County Planning Commission, and as used by the Census Bureau, the Hamlet of East Garden City is a separate community from the Village of Garden City.
Bear in mind, while large areas that have a "Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address are not in the Village of Garden City, at the same time there are parts of the Village of Garden City that have a "Mineola, NY 11501" mailing address.
http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.
Akso, http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

You must be on a large crusade to smear the name of such a respected news establishment.
However, you're still wrong!
See, you wrote that they are in East Garden City, while you admit that they are in Garden City zip code. Therefore, you are both right. They can be in the hamlet of East Garden City and Garden City (zip code) at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive of one another. Therefore, your claim as to them being wrong is incorrect. I think you owe them an apology.
For instance, they could have wrote:
"...The Marine Reserve Training Center in Nassau County."
See what I did there? If you are uneducated as to the term Mutually exclusive here is some additional information... Mutually exclusive events - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You might have no idea what people mean when they say you have too much time on your hands. Here is a resource that will help guide you towards solving this new founded problem.... Find Jobs. Build a Better Career. Find Your Calling. | Monster.com
Finally, if this was all too much for you to understand on an intelligent level here is the whole thread for you to read a second time... http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...s-welcome.html
BTW, don't ever cite or refer to your own posts as a source of knowledge to substantiate your argument. It's just bad form, and fairly insulting.
Sorry for the deleted posts. My laptop wouldn't put proper spacing in, so I had to try to retype my post.
