Very true. But people also turn on their blinders when they have plunked down money on a house. They get very myopic and just see what they want to see.

Sorta like people in Manhattan who brag how great their block is. All that means is that the homeless shelter is on the next block and the bums haven't made it down to their building yet to urinate in the doorway.

shelleyava, you seem to have the right attitude for the area. The Mastic area is a series of neighborhoods, some better than others, laced with hidden gems located at the end of dead end streets, on riverlets or estuaries, backing to public or parkland, on water, view of water, etc.

If you are street savvy, take reasonable precautions, are willing to travel to find friends, social activities, etc. the area may not offer, and do not need to have your home double in value any time soon you can make a nice life.

Absolutely. First you will need to lay down triple strand concertina wire which means pounding in pickets for approx. 72 hours to fortify your defense. Outline your sectors of fire and proceed to dig foxholes in a lazy W formation so that you have overlapping fields of fire. Most important, lay down your claymores along the perimeters with your tripwires concealed with surrounding foilage at the rear of your position, never the front.
