my buddy just had his nassau county pistol license suspended... why?

he failed to notify them in 10 days time that he moved to a different address in the same town.....

Reporting all your accidents, especially the ones that have no affect on anybody else, with the risk of being charged with a crime if you don't if just another example of the government stepping over the line.
Actually, you do lose your civil rights when granted the privilege of driving. For instance, the right against self-incrimination (5th Amendment.) If you're stopped for DWI, you don't have to take the test, but your refusal will result in the immediate suspension of your license. Why? Because when you accepted the privilege of driving, you also consented to tests to determine your fitness to drive.

You still didn't answer the question about why the requirement to report accidents shouldn't be. I gave you a litany of reasons why the state has legitimate interest in accidents, and you gave me .... your opinion.

To follow your reasoning, you're "taking care of an accident" without the state knowing about it. What you don't know is that the other driver doesn't have insurance, has been involved in a half dozen accidents in the past year, at least one of them involving injuries. If your accident with him had been reported, he might have lost his driving privilege -- or at least been subject to a motor vehicle hearing -- instead of being returned to the streets where two months later he kills a family of four.

That's why the state has a legitimate interest in accidents. The law is the law for a reason. Stop fighting it, obey it, and you won't have any problems.

there are always those that challenge governments control over lives... we have credit report agencies, medical reporting agencies, insurance claims central data banks... there are files on all of us pertaining to things you never knew.... but none the less thats the way of life in america.... one can always leave it if you feel its better elsewhere , but putting leaving aside just suck it up and get with the program or you will eventually find yourself on the outside of something you want looking in..... remember NOTHINGS A PROBLEM UNTIL ITS A PROBLEM.....

when your license is suspended you will realize what we are saying.

Sorry but I have little interaction with police and government officials outside of my profession and I plan on keeping it that way. Any accident that is worth reporting will be reported. A minor fender bender where the total dollar value of the damage just happens to be over $1000 is an instance where the government is overstepping their bounds if they ticket or suspend anyone. What's at issue here is the $1000 threshold. I understand any accident that shuts down a road or where people get hurt should be reported, that is reasonable. What isn't reasonable is the example I gave and that's another example of how the government wants to turn this into a fascist state, and as a former cop you accept it blindly.

You just don't get it. It's their ball, their rules, their game. Driving is a privilege, not a right. And the law is the law. No matter how much you whine and stamp you feet and thump you chest about a fascist state, it's still the law and you have to obey it or suffer the consequences. Grow up.

The law is flawed and most people know this. I will not report any minor accident that I do not feel is necessary. I have not in the past either - deal with it officer.

What a rude, arrogant and attacking post. Hopefully this gets removed like one of mine was removed.

Moderator cut: attack the post, not the poster You should have gotten a Police Report and she would have been summonsed up the keister for her insurance lapsing. People like her are the reason you pay the insurance rates you do. Getting Moderator cut: language off the road, like her, would lower insurance rates and keep her from doing the same to ME this week.

Thank you. You've just proved my point. Our libertarian believes that he/she is above the law and can pick and choose which ones to obey. Wonder what his/her tax return looks like?
