jwookie is on a distinguished road
I drove down to long island this Saturday. Travel on the first part 495 east was real slow. And my gps decided to skip tolls and took me all over queens .

I first saw New Hyde Park. Did not the area near the lirr station.

Then went on to Merillion Avenue and area of garden city below it. I liked garden city area much better than the area north of new hyde park lirr station. Some of the garden city place seemed too manicured and unreal almost museum like (not my cup of tea)

Next stop was Bethpage (basically north and north east of bethpage lirr station). Really liked this area.

Then went on to Babylon. Babylon (south of babylon lirrr station) seemed like a nice town and much more happening than any of the other places.

To end the trip, went to long beach to relax after around 7 hours of driving. Then headed to space billiards on NYC 34 W 32nd St. This is a Korean place on the 12th floor, hidden away from general public and you always seem to get a nice table (no bar) and can enjoy privy within a couple of friends. On the 3rd or 4th floor of the same building there is a nice karaoke lounge. Again there would be a lot of Korean kids, mostly from NYU. And if you want an Asian massage the cabbies outside always can be of help

That said, I am now more inclined towards Bethpage and Babylon. I think my wife is more a Bethpage kind of a person, will decide once she sees the place

There's some big bucks living in Garden City and quite a number of houses are very expensive, particularly the beautiful old Tudors and vintage houses near the village center/Franklin Avenue.

I think your choices of Babylon and Bethpage are good ones. Bethpage is more mid-Island which, although it would make your wife's commute by car to Stony Brook longer, might be more convenient overall. There is a train station in Bethpage but I'm not familiar with it personally; it's the first stop on the Ronkonkoma line after Hicksville. If you both took the train to work, you would both need to go from Bethpage to Hicksville and then in opposite directions from there (you would go straight west into NYC but she would need to connect to the Ronkonkoma branch in order to get to Stony Brook).
