Default Advice needed- I might have a job in Melville..I have some questions. :)

Hi, everyone I need some advice, and I'm hoping that someone here can help me. I live right now in Astoria and I have a (hopefully!!!) good chance of getting a job which is located in Melville. I was laid off from my job and have been looking since November, so I'm kind of hoping this will work out. I know the travel is not going to be easy, I don't have a car, and I would be relying solely on public transportation. I know what you're thinking, I'm nuts...LOL. My first problem would be the N95, which is the bus I would need to take from Farmingdale LIRR station...it doesn't run on the weekends, and the last bus is at 6:50 PM Mon-Fri. I know an option is a cab, but am I completely off base here by thinking that I can do this? If this job worked out, I would probably move from Astoria...but from what I've seen of apts on LI, they are pretty expensive. I would appreciate any advice that anyone has, because at this point, all I'm thinking of is that I might FINALLY have a job, and the heck with everything else, it'll all work out somehow....

i got a job in melville after being laid off too. it was a 45 minute commute one way for me. i too thought if it worked out, we'd move closer. but i got laid off from that job too.
i'm not too familiar with mass transit out east, but if you can afford to get a car, that might be easier.

I REALLY think you should get a car. Bus service out here is a complete joke, and a cab from Melville to Astoria will cost you an arm and a leg.

If you can't buy a car~try some car pooling websites.

LITM - Carpooling

Long Island City, New York Carpool / Rideshare: 3 car pool / ride share listings

Carpool Long Island 11743 → Long Island (NY) 11050 Rideshare New York Lift Share United States Vanpool USA

Use google for others~Good luck! Hope you get the job!

You're right---I wish that I could afford to get a car..If I do get the job, then the cab would probably be from Meville to the LIRR in Farmingdale.

That sucks... and this is what I'm actually afraid of, too. The company is a fairly large one, but I know that doesn't matter at all...no one at this point has any job security. Its absolutely awful. I hope that you find something soon.

As someone who was laid off a few months ago from the financial sector and still out of work, I can sure relate. Its probably not going to be all that easy, but if you can manage it do it, because you don't know when or where your next option will be.

A few years from now you probably would have more options, Town of Babylon Supervisor Steve Belleone and Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone are in talks about having an express bus service running from Farmingdale (around Republic Airport) up to the offices in Melville.

As far as your current options, other than what has been said I'm really not sure. Your best bet would probably be see if you can find someone living around Astoria and making a similar commute. If not you might be better off just getting some cheap car to get you back and forth. If you can take a train or bus service you could be alright, but that could become difficult depending on your hours/
