Help - Is there anywhere in Nassau County for us?
Since AlexisT pointed out that the LIRR won't work for my husband's commute to Hauppauge, and he feels he can carpool during the possible stretches he won't be able to drive, can anyone tell me if someplace in Nassau would work for us?
Under $350k
Safe
Fantastic schools; a general focus on academic excellence
Jewish community
Short drives, small stores (ideally a self-contained "town" type place)
Asian (Korean) community or ethnic diversity
Liberal
I am handicapped and can't drive or walk long distances. We've wanted to stay on the East End for the small towns and relaxing ease of getting around. But my husband works in Hauppauge and needs to be closer to work.
After all the looking I've done, I've learned quite a bit about Suffolk. Plainview leads the pack, but for its big-highway lifestyle. I know nothing about Nassau. In thinking that perhaps the population density creates shorter drives for basic necessities - or to get to anything - maybe even smaller stores(?) is there a town/hamlet that meets our needs?

Under 350? I dont think so.
Have you checked out Stony Brook?
Maybe you can get something small near the Village.
Its not too far from 111/Hauppauge.
I would think its a little cheaper than Plainview and its much nicer/better schools etc. and meets the Liberal/Jewish/Asian criteria.
Hauppauge by rail is nil.

I see that places like Baldwin (which was ranked a top place to live) and Massapequa have homes that are in our range. Is there something wrong with these towns?
I dislike Stony Brook and disagree that its schools are superior to Painview's. I'd much rather be in a small ranch in Plainview than in a large house in Setauket. Up near the village in SB, it's too far from everything but itself - as well as unaffordable.

The point is-you're not getting into Plainview for under 350k. So start expanding your search.

That isn't "the" point; it's your point, and it's incorrect. You've got a rude and unhelpful attitude, in this and other posts of yours.

I think you're being unrealistic- look at MLS. What house do you see in Plainview for under 350k? There is ONE that you MIGHT be able to get for under 350k.
Telling you to expand your search isn't rude- its honest. And in this post, I think you are the one being rude.

Steph is right about both things. Very little chance getting in plainview. Why did you start the thread if you didn't want to hear people's opinions. The answer to your question in my opinion is more or less, no, there is little to nothing for the specifications you listed. Best bet would probably be to rent of another 1-3 yrs save up a larger down payment and let salaries increase some until either you can afford in the 400 range or the market has come down more, which is a possibility.

I began this thread asking about densely populated areas in Nassau. I asked about Baldwin. I want to learn about Nassau County. My search isn't narrow - I gave an example of a place I like, the reasons I do and the reasons I don't. So why are you posting solely to tell me to expand my search? Do you have any input other than reiterating that I need to search, which is what I'm doing and the reason I'm posting? If not, please don't make a stressful situation more stressful for me. If you wouldn't say something to someone in person, don't do so online.
