Best place to rent for the money
We have 72 hours to decide if we want the 900square foot 1 bedroom for 1125 in Patchogue (in the village within walking distance to the water)
The area appears to be nice etc. But my husband will still be working in brooklyn and commuting by car.
How bad is this commute if he needs to get into brooklyn by 10/11 am? He would leave brooklyn by 3ish.
He goes to school in Touro Law Center so even now he still commutes that far and then drives back at night. His job is flexibale and he can leave after the morning traffic (when does that end???).
How bad is the traffic on sunrise highway towards SSP?
For the money do you guys think we could do better/ closer west?
Please note that the apartment we are considering does not have any luxuries. No new kitchen appliances , no granite counter tops etc. It is average in terms of those things. New carpeting- yes. Plain bathroom. Kitchen is old with a stove and dishwasher from the 90s. Simple fridge. Nothing fancy. So could we get something similar for the money closer west.

I cant really speak from experience, but my guess is the commute would be hell. Communting to brooklyn from almost anywhere is hell, but patchogue is really far even without the possible massive traffic that might be faced. $1125 for a 1 bedroom doesn't seem like such a spectacular deal that you could not find much closer in a similar price range. My sister in law rents a 1 bedroom in rego park, queens for 1000 including all utils.

Does your sister rent in a complex or in a private house.
We do not want Queens. We both go to school in Long Island so the considerations are really nassau or suffolk. That way only one of us commutes instead of 2 of us.
Also, we have an infant and 1 on the way, we do not want anythign more than a one bedroom because the babies are always with us and we dont use the living room for the purpose of couch /tv. we can sleep in it or put the kids it, and we just dont need a bigger place than 1bedroom for example. BUT there are renting restrictions to how many people you can have in x amount of square feet. So a lot of small one bedrooms can not rent to us either.
900Sq fet is HUGE too
A lot of people who rent apartments in their house do not want to rent to someone with a 10 month old, let alone someone who is about to have a newborn. We got turned down once we mentioned baby

My SIL rents in a house. Its probably 600 sq ft
I am pretty sure its actually illegal to discriminate like that and rejected you based on that, some kind of equal housing law.
I also rented in bayside myself a 1 bedroom for 1150 about 4 yrs ago. Bayside is basically just like long island and really nice. I currently rent in a house, a 2 bdrm in babylon for 1500, over 1000 sqft and really nice, had a family with 2 children here prior to me renting it. Have you looked elsewhere and not found much in the lower price range.
I personally just think commuting in general is hell.

Where in Brooklyn? If it's downtown Brooklyn (just a guess since he's in Law School), I think it would be a nightmare to take the LIE in then negotiate Queens and Brooklyn traffic. If it's Sheepshead Bay, or somewhere he can take the Southern State to, not as bad a drive. I dk about rush hour - and getting there at 10 a.m. he will hit rush hour - but it would normally take just a bit over an hour to take the Southern State to somewhere in "southern" Brooklyn (we don't really use that term, but look at a map and see what I mean). I think it's far more hectic, more traffic and more of a hassle to go to Bklyn Heights / downtown via the LIE. If it were me, I can't imagine wanting to live in Patchogue badly enough to rent a 1BR apt there and commute to Brooklyn.

It is illegal to discriminate on the basis of family status unless it's a designated seniors-only community (Fair Housing Act). Report the landlord: Housing Discrimination Complaints - HUD
This is one of the most widespread forms of discrimination, unfortunately, and many rental ads violate the law. (All those "professional couple preferred" ads are illegal.)
(BTW, it's generally best not to mention any children. You aren't obligated to tell them and it's illegal for them to ask.)

Let me explain my husbands situatuion.
He works in South brooklyn, he drives from clients house to house and would only have to work 3 days a week to get all his clients done. He just supervises the home attendants and makes a care plan . He is a RN.
He goes to law school in Long Island, his law school is like 15-20 min from Patchogue. (Touro Law School)
He only drives on SSP.
Right now he commutes to Touro at about 430 to get there by 630 and then drives home at 1000 pm and gets home by 1130 or midnight because he has to look for parking here in Midwood.
So basically, he would be doing the commute anyways , just in reverse, and i would not be doing the commute because I go to Stony Brook and it is really close to Patchogue.
In terms of discrimination. That is not exactly what i meant. A lot of times based on square footage you can not have 3 or 4 people in the apartment to begin with. We did call a few people who were renting out part of their house and once we mention children they say that it is not going to work etc, they do not want someone with kids.
When you rent from an individual, i thought they had the right to approve their tenant and who they rent to.
In an apartment complex no one told us anything, except the few places that were 55 and over communities(they said that they will accept anyone over 19 but no kids)

Looking at the map, is see the following
Touro is in Islip, Patchogue is about 10 miles east of it.
Stony brook is a little more that 10 miles north of islip.
My personal opinion of what I would do if it were me would be to split the difference a little bit. Maybe live in west babylon / west islip, it will cut 20 mins or so off his brooklyn commute and the commute to touro in islip will be about the same. A little longer to stony, but not so much to make it a pain.
You may have other reasons to want to live in patchogue though, and it wasnt really your original question, but thought I would put in the opinion. Someone with some experience will hopefully ring in with details about what the commute to brooklyn will be like.

as for the discrimination, i dont think it matters who is renting or where, its like equal opportunity employment. Like alexis said, you might as well not even mention the child. Pets are one thing, but children and family is another. I have never heard of that limited number of people in a certain sq ft space either, dont know if that is real or not.

Every apartment compelx we went to would list how many people could live in that square footage?
I thought it was/is some type of NY law ?
We also do have pets. Two cats, so a lot of places will not rent because of that too.
