Or if they do work it is an early "internship". This is not a knock or a show of support for the area, just what I have observed in my work in the region. One guy's opinion. Obviously the schools success in placing children in top college program's speaks for itself; I am pretty comfortable saying though that these students are not hopping any local buses to work these days. And that lack of perspective can sometimes breed the types of individuals that can stereotype an area as snobbish.
The parents think they are all doing the right thing by doing all of the above. My husband and some of his other CEO's say how hard it is to work with this new generation. They have always been told they are the best and even in sports everyone gets a trophy at least in the grade school level.
My husband and his friends say you cannot just come out and criticise
them because they are not use to that. You have to find a round about way to tell them they are doing a rotten job and do it this way. If you criticise them they will just quit. I find this very sad. Syosset is no different then most of the country. Little Johnny is the best.

You're welcome.

Sometime prior to, or as part of, the formation of the Syosset-Woodbury Central School District, the Locust Grove School District was an independent school district and is now part of the Syosset-Woodbury Central School District.

This is true. Plus, they think they should be running the place 6 mos after they start! It's a joke. There's a big cut off, I've seen. 30 yrs and above are more "normal." Below, it's blankee and pacifier time.

The twenty-something crowd actually needs a good recession to understand that jobs are not an entitlement, they are an earned privilege...I of course am not wishing for a slow economy, but a nice downcycle in hiring would breed a little humility for a class of employees that either ducked back into grad school after 9/11 to hide from a tough market and/or have graduated to nothing but multiple job offers. I have witnessed interns asking an SVP of Global sales why they are not getting paid for the lunch hour he was spending his very tight schedule speaking with them throughout...because they should technically be compensated for working...I never had that type of brash entitlement complex. I would have been happy with an actual paying internship, let alone getting the lunch covered.

Apparently everyone who graduates college these days can be a Project Manager immediately...God I sound like my grandfather

No Joeprfess you do not sound like your Grandfather. You sound like us 35 and over who were not entitled to anything but what we worked for. If you did well you would get a raise or a promotion on the other hand if you did poorly you were either without a job or you were written up. We live in a world now that is so PC that you can disrespect your boss, start rumors about your co workers or just do about anything and you cannot be fired. If you are fired all you need is a lawyer and the company's no this.

Garden City is mostly Irish and Italian Catholic, some WASPs but not many left. Syosset is mostly Jewish. But both towns are economically comparable and have their share of snobs as would any affluent area.

Well, there may not be a lot of what is technically WASP (English origin), but there are still a lot of Protestants. And the "uniform" for most GC residents is all WASP. I love it.

Old, 2000 census from city-data.com -

Ancestries: Irish (35.3%), Italian (30.2%), German (18.9%), English (7.0%), Polish (4.8%), Greek (3.2%).

So, it's 7% English, and over 60% Irish/German/English...a lot higher than a typical LI community.

I moved here and felt the need to get yellow and lime polos, plaid shorts. Funny, but I do kinda like it. Nice feel to the town.

I have been reading the posts here and this is the way I see it. The people who are comparing towns (Syosset vs Garden City) are just the ones I consider "yuppie larva"! It doesn't matter what town you grew up in...it was your home town and you will always have warm ties to that town! The towns that have alot of money today, didn't necessarily have money back then. Some towns like Hicksville, which I spent alot of time in growing up going to the old Mid Island Shopping Plaza, were always post war blue collar, like Levittown. Syosset was always white collar as a rule. There was and still is alot of old money in Syosset. It is what it is. I was born in Syosset in 1955. It was a wonderful, small close knit community where everyone knew everyone else. Lollipop Farm was the place that put Syosset on the map and was in walking distance from our house. Jackson Ave was much more narrow than it is now. It was lined with 50ft tall oak trees. On Jericho Tpke east of Lollipop Farm was virtually nothing but the old Tinker mansion. Up by what is now Seaford Oyster Bay Expy was a hamburger place called Hamburger Square. On Jericho Tpke where Burger King now stands was The Harmony Rest Pizza place. They had deer behind that place back then. I admit that I do not like the building progress that has taken place over the past 30 yrs or so but being rated as one of the top school districts in the nation brought in lots of people and upscale building. In the middle of Syosset, on either side of jericho Tpke you will still find very down to earth folks. If you want to see the loyalty of Syosset residents both old and new go to Classmates.com and look up Syosset schools. Most towns have a couple of hundred people signed up... Syosset has a couple of thousand signed up! That alone speaks volumes about this town! Snobs? welcome to the 21st century. I do feel however that the schools do turn out one of the highest numbers of kids going on to 4yr colleges and white collar professions! But isn't that what we want for our kids after all? I don't know anyone that says " I want my kid to be an auto mechanic or street sweeper...both respectable occupations, but we always want them to have and be better, don't we? I will always love Syosset...it's in my heart, but I have friends that feel the same way about Hicksville and levittown. When I exit the Long Island Expy in Syosset, a small voice inside me says...." I'm Home"!
