Y'ever notice that its always the people on the main roads who complain about everything from trash to teens to traffic.

In my eyes.. it was priced into their purchase.
You get what you get and you dont get upset.

You want peace and quiet, dig deeper or buy smaller.

Honestly, once you get about 4 or more houses from the main road, you should be fine. I live 5 houses from Stewart Ave. and barely ever notice it.

Yeah.... if you live in Muttontown, East Hampton or Garden City, but not for the vast majority of Long Islanders.

There's a big difference between living just off the main road vs. ON the main road. In many cases, there's no difference between being 5 houses off a main road or 25 houses...

OnOurWayHome is on a distinguished road
I'm in Fort Salonga, 4 houses off 25A, and I really don't hear anything. There is a traffic light at the end of the road.

I lived on a busy street before, and will not again.

Well, duh..... yeah, I was making a comparison and I prefer living on a busy street with moving traffic than living on a side street where there were inconsiderate imbeciles who thought it was ok to blast "music" and "base tapes" at all hours of the day and night.

but what if those imbeciles lived next door to you on the "main/busy street" where you currently reside? Would you then hate all types of streets? lol...

Seems silly to make a statement like "I prefer living on a main/busy street" when the reason you didn't like the side street had nothing to do with, you know...the actual location of your house.

I grew up 1 block (about 10 houses) from a busy parkway. I always heard cars passing by and during the rush hour it was worst.

hmm, that throws a wrench in the equation of what others were saying. I guess we should qualify the roads we are talking about.

Highways and parkways, LIE, sunrise, northern ... etc. Distance must be greater for these ??? .. what about tree coverage, the houses along the northern state with 15 ft of trees behind them, is that enough?

Maybe others are thinking of local main roads in the their town ... old country road, main st, deer park ave, which needs less of a buffer

Street had trees and shrubs, all homes were split level. There was a green buffer along the parkway and a local side street which ran parallel to the parkway buffer. (For the record this was in Nassau County) The topography was very flat. The house was easily 650' from the closest lane on the parkway. There was 1 small window on the side of the house which faced the parkway.

In the winter it was not intrusive, but as soon as the windows were opened -- noise!

You could hear the swoooooooshhhhhhh as the cars sped by. Could easily identify muscle cars from sedans, bad mufflers from quiet ones. One could tell a Honda from a Harley from a Triumph.
