All the OP has to do is go to the street or area they are talking about at different times of the day or night and sit in their car with the windows open and listen to what it sounds like. We recently were thrilled when we found our lifelong "dream house", but wound up passing on it because we did the above and were shocked at just how many cars went by in the afternoon and then again late at night and how loud they were.

Honestly, I think sometime people find things to nitpick about on purpose. You really aren't going to hear a busy road (assuming speed is 40mph or less) unless you start trying to hear it.
Think about it. Let's assume you live 4 houses from the road. You are almost a football field away from the road. Unless cars are flying down there with loud engines all the time, you really aren't going to notice it.
Don't let a good house get away because of some OCD.

sounds like some people want to justify their too close to a main road house.
I find it funny that people can tell you what you are able to hear. As I sit here in my apartment two blocks from sunrise highway with the windows open and hear the tires on the road, I guess I am imagining things and its just my nature to try and find things to complain about.

I used to live a few blocks from the LIE and I can tell you that you could hear it. But you got used to it. Once they put up those walls you couldn't hear much anymore.
However for example, in Nesconset you probably would not want to live on Windwood Drive which is off of Nichols Road and close to where Nichols meets Moriches Road. Not that its a bad area, seems very nice but during evening commute and weekends, that area gets very congested with everyone going to the mall, and then during the Christmas rush, hoo boy.
However in the above area's defense, there are back roads that you can take to get around that intersection. But there may be an area where you don't have that option. So best thing to do is first check it out on google maps, look at the satellite image and then go there and see.
In defense of some people being picky, well, they may be light sleepers I guess.

Like I said.
If its near a double yellow line on LI, it sucks and will be reflected in the resale value since there is a significant portion of the market who wont touch it no matter what.
Its kinda like living near powerlines, or in a flight pattern or near the RR tracks etc.

"Little to no visible culture exists in Laurel Hollow, as it is predominantly residential. There is only one business in the village, a flower nursery on 25A"
Akin to my Muttontown/East Hampton argument.
I see youre just joing us

I live very close to the LIE. There is woods of about a block long between it and my home. There is no wall along this particular stretch. I hear it. I see headlights through the trees in the winter.
When I was a kid I grew up on Asharoken on the water, where all the lots are long bowling alley shaped. Sitting on the beach in front of the house we could hear the cars going by up on Asharoken Ave.
I'm not sure there's a place where you're not going to hear traffic, since there are major roads every 2 or 3 miles, everywhere!!

Noise sensitivity is very much an individual/personal thing. And it's not only when you're sleeping (unless you sleep with windows open, which not everyone does) but also when you're out in your yard or simply have windows open during the day.
We currently live in an 100% residential and heavily treed area that is blissfully quiet.
My last house was about 1/2 mile from Montauk Highway and I was not bothered by major traffic noise at all (and I'm SUPER sensitive to noise at all times). But my nephew just bought a house that is the same distance (1/2 mile) from Sunrise Highway and also from the "fast" part of Route 231 and he commented this past weekend that he didn't realize there was so much traffic noise ("constant whooshing from cars going by") audible in the backyard. In his case I'm sure it has to do with the cars going faster (50-60 mph) on his nearby roadways than they usually do on Montauk Highway ... and the volume of course. Montauk Highway is one lane in each direction, while Sunrise and Route 231 are two lanes.
We have seen a few houses in Dix Hills near the Expressway and even with the walls and during the summer, the constant traffic roar was just too much for me to even consider it. My hobby is gardening and that noise would drive me crazy in short order. The Caledonia area just south of Northern State doesn't seem to be quite as bad (though still quite noticeable) and I'm sure that's because it's only cars -- no trucks like on the LIE.

Question.... if you lived in an area where people constantly blasted music day and night, thought nothing of having "parties" where music was blasting until 3 or 4 am or some inconsiderate asss decided to park his car and blast a "base tape".... what would you do?
