Default Places to spend one (maybe two) night(s) at Montauk?

I work in sales, and I have finally managed to get two days off in a row. So, to celebrate this, I wanted to go to Montauk with my gf. Anyone have any suggestions on where to stay if I was only going to stay for a night or maybe two? Because it is only one or two nights, price is not too too much of a concern, although keeping in mind I am in NO WAYS rich lol.

Any suggestions would be great!

Ok, so here's the down low on staying in Montauk. I lived there for two summers.

Gurney's is the obvious choice and is a nice place, but away from the social scene, if that's what you want to call it, in Montauk. The real sell is that it's right on the water. Even if you don't stay here go eat at the restaurant, the views are beautiful and expansive. YOu want a table right by the window that goes to the water.

The Montauk Yacht Club will be found on any expedia type site you go to. A painted over rat's nest, a place usually frequented by people that don't know better. It is usually filled with Long Island families and their bratty kids in the hotel, and the upper crust boating community on the docks. If you have a boat then docking here isn't bad, but the hotel is held up by duct tape and chewing gum. If you're unlucky you will be put to sleep by a cat that get's caught in the walls. Used to happen all the time there. The water there is part of Peconic Bay and the beach isn't an ocean beach, but just a patch of sand. The food is always overpriced and never can be trusted. Avoid this place like the swine flu.

If you can swing it, the Montauk Manor is very nice, but it's on the top of a hill and doesn't go up against any type of body of water. However, it offers the nicest hotel in the area by far. The brunch here is probably the only meal I would recommend you eat at a hotel. There's are also a lot of little motels that are in town that will probably offer good rates pre Memorial day weekend. They're all kind of hit or miss.

As far as restaurants go, don't go to any that are at a hotel, except for Gurney's for the view. Whichever hotel you stay at go to the concierge and ask for them to direct you to Gosman's dock. On this little strip of land sit a lot of good seafood restaurants. They are always changing names, but John's should still be there and it's great for simple seafood! Also, you can just got to Gosman's which is a little over priced, but not a bad view and decent seafood.

The Harvest restaurant in town always has raive reviews, but reservations are tough to get. Nick's is also a good little place that serves decent food. I would stay away from the Crow's Nest, they've got a reputation of getting people to go claiming "last restaurant before Europe" or some ******* line. Let the tourists eat here!

Don't forget to hit the Lobster Roll on your way out there for some good old fashioned lobster on a .....wait for it....roll There are other little shrimp shacks that offer more bang for the buck, but they aren't LI historical landmarks.

unfortunately, teh shark shack closed down some years ago. So watering holes I'll leave to you. Ask your concierge what is good. The kids they have working the desk usually know the best places to go and won't steer you wrong. Just don't be a cheap bastard and not tip them graciously.

One last thing. Go to ditch plains and check out the best surf point on Long Island. The only true reef break. Try it if you think you got the marbles, but I warn you. It's no beach break at Rober Moses Enjoy man, I love Montauk.

I've always stayed at the Ocean Beach since I was a little kid on family vacations. The accommodations themselves are fairly mundane, but you're right on the ocean and situated in the heart of downtown Montauk, so you can walk everywhere. As tom said, if you stay at Gurney's it's a drive to everything except the beach. Nothing better than waking up early and walking out on the balcony to take in the crisp ocean breeze and that gorgeous Atlantic shoreline. Last time I checked it was one of the more affordable beach front hotels as well. Lots of families, and kids....if that bothers you. It never phased me.

There are definitely much more upscale places, but I've always figured why mess with a good thing? Ocean Beach gets a big thumbs up from me. You really can't go wrong anywhere in Montauk, it's a great place and you should try to spend as little time in the hotel room as possible!!

Montauk Manor is incredible.

I've been staying out east in Montauk or East Hampton at least once per summer for 20 years. Last year my husband and I stayed at Montauk Manor for the first time for our anniversary and loved it. There is a huge selection in the style of rooms available. The patio rooms are incredible - they are duplex units with a huge patio out back. We're going again for our anniversary in May - I can't wait!

We've stayed at The Royal Atlantic for years....it's right next to the Ocean Beach, a block or two from town. I like RA better only because you can literally step out onto the sand from your room. Have fun!
