Default Couple of question(taxes and car insurance)

What is the average price for car insurance in Suffolk county? (CRV and Civic)

Does Suffolk have county tax?

For example my husband pays X amount from each paycheck for local city tax due to living in brooklyn, will this be replaced by a Suffolk County Tax of some sort or is there no tax?

No local income tax. Only NYC and Yonkers have this.

Car insurance: That depends on a lot of factors!! Do you have comprehensive and/or collision, age of car etc. I pay $750/yr with collision and comprehensive on a late-model Accord, someone with a continuous good history might pay less (I was out of the country for several years).

And let's not forget your FICO score !
Also depends on where you live (high risk areas = higher premiums), if the car is garaged, annual mileage, etc.

FYI, you can reduce your premium for a period of three years if you take a Defensive Driving Class (offered at many libraries for a nominal charge).

Quick Question: How do you get a policy that actually lasts for 1 year? I've been with two different companies and they always give me a 6-month policy.

Mine's 6 months as well, or at least that's how they bill. Our rate stayed the same this last renewal though. I'm with GEICO, for what it's worth.

NY policies are all 6 months unless you are in the assigned risk.

Not true.

I have been with Liberty Mutual since 1999 and never once had a 6-month policy. Always 12 months.

They bill for the full year at inception and all renewals, although they offer the option of paying in installments (for a fee of course) if the customer wants to do that.

My SO has had State Farm for three years and likewise all his auto policies have been for 12 months, and billed that way.

worked for state farm for 10 years, as a claim rep and for an agent - if you are in NY and have a SF policy that's for a year, you are in the assigned risk. Sorry.
-twingles

PS just because you pay it in 12 monthly installments doesn't mean it's a yearly policy - they do that as a courtesy to their policyholders, but it's still based on a 6 month term.

Both my SO and I are in Rating Class 07 on our policies. Since you're in the insurance business you know that Class 07 is about the furthest away from assigned risk as you can get.

However, I misspoke about the company when I asked him about it just now. He switched from State Farm to Liberty last year (and has a full 12-month policy term, from June 2008 to June 2009 as shown right on the policy declarations page). Since I don't pay his bills I didn't know he had switched. (duh)

My Liberty Mutual auto policy declarations page says "Policy Period: Nov 20 2008 to Nov 20 2009" so clearly that is a full year policy also.

Neither of us has ever paid in installments. I just mentioned that in case people thought that the payment schedule chosen had anything to do with the policy term itself.

I currently have my auto policy with MetLife (less $$ than previously) and it's a 12 months policy.
