If you want to see what happpens when developers design your town for you by buying elected officials ...drive from Selden-Centereach on Middle Country Rd at rush hour.
Its a complete failure in planning and the posterchild of dumb growth.

Schoolwise i agree. QOL, maybe, maybe not. I grew up in queens and i am used to congestion, so maybe i can deal with 25 between selden and centereach. To be honest with you, i like that alot of people are out and about, reminds me of my childhood growing up. I guess selden/centereach are sort of "queens like". Maybe thats why i like it.

Perhaps I am missing something. If I am please respond back (PM)
Thank you

You are far enough from the high tension wires. It is a nice quiet area, with well kept homes. No problems, dont worry about that area. The only place i would not buy, is on eastwood blvd south of the library, and Mark tree road south of 43rd st. They are not bad, but a little too close to 25. Eastwood village of centereach is very reasonably priced, low taxes and has a low crime rate.

BTW, you should look at Bellport HS's football pic from 2008. Lot of white kids for a minority neighborhood but no Asians.

You do realize that south of the LIRR Bellport gets whiter and more affluent?
I know a number of people who attended HS there -- all white and all south of $outh Country Rd.
As for dman72's assessment of the emo-whiny and Asian students at WMHS -- he's not too far off target. I'd add eggheads into the mix, too.

Crooks: Just curious how you came up with your ratings for the school quality; can you elaborate? I looked at the NYS school reports and all 3 districts appear to be fairly similar in student performance.
I continue to be disappointed by Middle Country scores when compared to Sachem. I am espeically concerned about the scores at Eugene Auer compared to Cayuga and Wenonah schools (also in Lake Grove). The areas are pretty similar, so why the poorer scores in Auer? I can think of 2 potential reasons: (1) more parents send their kids to private schools in Middle Country (due to Middle Country's less-than-stellar reputation) or (2) the teachers may not be as good in Middle Country and/or the district is just not run well as Sachem.
Regarding school environment, I have seen the inside of Centereach High School and frankly it is depressing. Really run down and old. I have never seen Sachem North so I do not know how that school looks. Having a nice school environment, in my opinion, is important as well in helping to instill school pride. I know that's not the only thing though.
Thoughts anyone?

Newsday, but your right, its a very small percentage that separates them.
Im not a fan of Newfield HS either.
Sachem trumps all 3... its just massive and thats unattractive for some.
I imagine Longwood will eventually be very simlar as the population shifts Eastward.

There are a bunch of "more run down" areas in Sachem..old area of Holtsville, older areas of Ronkonkoma and Lake Ronkonkoma, Farmingville. None is as bad as the area of Centereach along Mark Tree Road between 347 and Middle Country, and the elementary schools in those areas of Sachem out perform the elementarys in Middle Country, as do the High School. The nicer areas of Selden (by SCCC, I guess) are fine..I'd live there if I didn't have a kid.
Maybe they are becoming more similar, but Sachem still gets the nod according to most sources.
North Bellport is an entirely different story. That's basically a slum.

Actually, yes, I am aware Bellport gets more white and affluent south of the tracks. I live there. I'm white, but hesitate to call myself "Affluent".

I say leave Centereach HS the way it is. Its all about the teachers, and parents involvement. Maybe thats why our taxes are fairly reasonable. Its not like its falling down. When i lived in medford, they redid the hs, and after 5 yrs, my school tax doubled, and guess what? The test scores went DOWN. My kids who attended Pat-Med HS didnt care at all about the upgrades. At thier age, they dont notice, or care about things like that.
