You need to be more specific.... what is it that you are looking for ?
There is a walmart/KFC/McDonalds and "wait for 15 mins to make a left turn" in rush hour traffic.
Middle Country schools .... not very highly rated, Borderlines go to sachem, which is ok.
Houses are affordable compared to neighboring towns.
If you get stressed out, there is a 24 hr pharmacy too !!

I lived in South Setauket for 5 years (Nichols & Hawkins) and am very familar with Selden and Centereach.
I hated living there but for no reason other than traffic. The neighborhoods are fine, plenty of shopping and houses are priced right. Honestly, It's an alright place to live depending on what you are used to. If you like sprawling grassy meadows, forget it! I wouldn't touch Nassau County, for example but that's just me!
Not sure what the trouble is with Middle Country Schools; this is a good district.
Rt 25 is bad, as is the drive from the LIE up Nichols Rd (Both ways) during rush hour. If you live there you learn the back ways to get around.

Great Schools rates Middle Country a respectable 7 (Sachem gets an 8, Three Village a 9, South Country a 4). They have a GREAT library.

LOL,15 mins????? 5 tops, but yes, traffic on 25 at rush hour is terrible. There are many back ways to get around if you live off 25. And as far as affordable, i agree, thats why i bought here. It is very safe, and your kids will do just fine in the school, as long as you are a decent parent. There are some "shady" houses right off of 25 though, so stay further north, or south of 25.

There are some really nice homess north of 25 and west of Nicolls Road. But I would have to say they are $450+. If your spending that $ I would buy in a better school district. Im not saying Middle Country is bad but better can be had for $450.
