Moving to Deer Park...
I need some help. My husband and I are relocating to Long Island. His boss lives in Dix Hills, and we (obviously don't make what she makes) are looking at some houses in a very residential area of Deer Park. We have no kids, just got married and have a pretty quiet lifestyle. I want someplace safe, easy, and convienent to the Freeway.
I would love some advice on what you think about Deer Park. Please help?
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Deer park really isnt close to the freeway. Its kind of "out there". Have to go to Middletown for most of your shopping and that could be 25-30 min. ride. Some or most of Deer Park is Port Jervis schools, even though you dont have kids yet, dont buy into this district, resale isnt very good. Hope this helps a little.

I think they were referring to Deer Park on Long Island. It has some good areas, and some not as nice areas. Do your homework well.

Where will your husband be working? Just because his boss lives in Dix Hills doesn't mean he will be working near there.
And BTW, Deer Park isn't great - it's got some bad areas there. Take a look at Elwood, East Northport, Commack - they're pretty close, but not on top of Dix Hills. And I think they're better areas than Deer Park.

I have a friend that lives there...I have done some research there as well. Stay closer to Dix Hills, Half Hollow hills schools if you can get a house with that school district. Deer Park schools are just ok. Check out www.greatschools.net. Any house you go look at you can put the address on this website and it will tell you the school you would be zoned for. And you can look up school scores, test scores, ethnic breakdown, % of free lunch (that is a biggie, shows economic status of others zoned for that school) etc and make your judgements from that.
Be wary of the next town over...Wyandanch. Stay far away from the border of Deer Park and Wyandanch and close to Dix Hills border (I forget what that is but you may know when you see it).

How far will you want to travel to work? Is the important ? and what hours will you be traveling, shift?
Babylon Village is a nice area, if further out east you have Sayville, Smithtown, Port Jefferson, just a few. If working in Nassau County, there are lovely towns.

LI doesnt have freeways. Deer Park is rite by the Southern State Parkway though. I agree with others, Deer Park is not the greatest. Hop over to the North Shore and its only a 1/2 hour away. There are other areas with a 1/2 hour that are really nice.

Deer Park is just south of the Long Island Expressway and does have some nice residental neighborhoods.
There is a large scale outlet mall planned to be built there - so be aware that may bring a great deal of traffic to an area that is already pretty burdened. I know there has been a tremendous amount of opposition against the mall, but I believe it's going to be built. You may want to take that into consideration.
