I have heard mixed results about Middle Country, though more good than bad.
However, part of it comes from the student and parents themselves. The student should apply themselves with the parents getting involved. That is part of the equation for a kid to do well. Yes it is possible for a child to excel in a good or bad district. But the other part of the equation comes from the school. Do I feel that they'll help my child? I think so, but I'm planning on being involved as well.
Middle Country is one of the districts that I'm considering. Miller Place, Rocky Point and Sound Beach are farther located than I want to go.

I'm assuming you went to greatschools.com and looked at the reviews there?

Visted Greatschools.com reviewed the school reports and they were favorable.
I do agree with thebobs that part of it comes from the student and parents themselves. My wife is a stay at home mom and works hard with my kids to get their homework done and studying done, so I am not terribly worried.

Stay at home mom=1 point additional on the school ratings, IMO. My wife is a teacher, so I'm hoping that's an additional point.

Amen on the extra points
You wont find the district to be unfavorable but in time you may find the area to be.
Really spend some time in the thick of it and see if you still love it.
Its not a bad area, but just keep in mind the years have not been kind to Central Brookhaven.
Again Id check North (or South too Bayport Blue Point Sayvile Holbrook Bohemia etc etc.)
Its a buyers market ...why settle?

Centereach=Exit 62
Selden, Miller Place, Sound Beach =Exit 63.
Rocky Point =Exits 63, 66 and 68 (depends on what side of town youre on).
Dont be snookered by the convenience to the LIE RE Agent pitch.
Ask anyone from Farmingville how thats worked out for them over the years.
IMHO the best QOL on LI is to be found near its shores.
Youre already paying a premium to live on an Island ...its worth the extra mile.
Look South too.

You can have easy (literally minutes) access to the LIRR, MacArthur, LIE, Vets, Sunrise, and a better rated school than Middle Country and Sachem. There's a district, I think it's called "Connetquot".
Am I showing my bias? Perhaps. Look at the stats though. A mixture of wealthy, middle, and starter areas. Even a couple of decent condo complexes, plus taxes are relatively low due to there being industry along vets in Ronkonkoma. No real "downtowns", but near enough to Sayville to make it easy to scoot down. I'm seeing acceptable starters around 300K now. I plan on selling my condo and moving up in the next 1-2 years..I check the MLS almost every day, and Connetquot is one of the districts I always check.
