Best place to live in suffolk county?
Hey everyone,
I am new to this site and have recently decided to move to LI from Queens. My husband and I both work within the 5 boroughs and would like @ 40-50 mile commute, but know nothing about LI.
We have a new daughter and would like to find a nice, safe, quiet town with good schools. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Please be as specific as you can when stating reasons I should or shouldn't consider a certain area.
Thank you

Basing commute on mielage is strange, but what is your budget? Looking to buy or rent?

sorry, we're looking to buy and the mileage thing is because I don't want to commute for 5 hours a day. We are looking to spend @ 400K.
I started looking at Lindenhurst, West Islip, Northport areas but really need some help. We are open to any suggestions for areas because we are just beginning the search.

Considering that length of commute, those areas are a good start. Also Babylon, Huntington, all sorts of areas in Eastern Nassau County are good too. You're looking at houses from medium sized to tiny depending on the town. Nothing new, of course, that's at least 600K on LI.

You looked in Lindenhurst and West Islip, did you skip Babylon Village? Lindy and W Islip are fine towns (sorry Walter), but BV is just a wonderful place to live. If you are not familiar with the place, go visit, it's unique in its beauty and character.

^ Just be aware that a 40-50 mile commute can turn into 1.2-2 hours each way during rush hour. Food for thought.

Understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland"
lms5377, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...you-think.html may help you understand the great geographic confusions caused by non-conforming ZIP Code postal zones.
When you do find a house that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)
And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.

Agreed, I would not go East of Babylon/Huntington as a commuter. Both are roughly 30 miles or 1 hour by train from Mid-Town.

^^ By train? Figure about an hour and 45 minutes door to door. And thats if your close to both Penn & Babylon.
