I just moved here (north shore Suffolk) from the Triangle about a month ago... and so far, I think LI is FANTASTIC. I'm thrilled w/the move. We came for job-related reasons; the same reason we were in NC actually. We lived near the hallowed Southpoint mall in Durham, and it was just one giant chain store surrounded by hoards of cookie cutter hardboard houses. I'd say that where we are in LI is about 1000 times more beautiful, and I'm absolutely in love with the amount of independent business here and relative lack of big box retail (yes, I know it's here... but at least it's not the ONLY thing here). When I take my kids up to run around in the green space around Northport harbor, I feel like I'm on vacation or something... and don't get me started on the schools. Even the worst school district around us now is heads and shoulders better than what we had in NC.
Of course, we're renting and haven't popped for that half million dollar shoebox yet; that will hurt... but for now at least, I'm thinking I won't really mind.

Welcome! We briefly stopped into that mall during our one visit to the Triangle area so I know exactly what you mean. I was actually looking for a specific item that was only available from the Coldwater Creek brick-and-mortar stores and there is a big one in that mall. The traffic in that area was pretty bad and this was midweek. So I'm wondering (since there is the occasional complaint about Long Island traffic!) how you think the traffic here compares to that of the Triangle area: Better? Worse? About the same?
Of course as you're here longer you'll find a goodly number of shortcuts and alternate routes you can take to/from work to avoid many of the jams you may encounter.

Is there a picture somebody can post of the requisite dead horse being beaten...again...
Home is where it makes the most sense for you, and if appropriate, your family. For some it is LI, for others it is NC, for others it is Australia...Jobs, relationships, perceptions of quality of life, factor into this for everybody, regardless of where you live. Please (although I am presently keeping the thread alive) can we put this thread to rest with the 100 other threads on the same topic??

I'm still trying to figure out the Long Island/North Carolina connection. Is someone injecting subliminal messages to Long Islanders that they must go to NC? I wonder what would happen if I put on these funny sunglasses... whoa!**
**Movie reference.

Now I could say that "hour and a half to beach and hour and half to the mountains" and really mean it. I'm in Midlothian,VA and absolutely love it! You could keep NC and LI best move I ever made was coming here

20 years ago it was Georgia. 15 years ago it was Florida. Now it's NC - who knows which state will be next?
Still not sure why anyone cares who is leaving and why. The people who are staying are far more up in arms about it than anyone!

I remember that movie.
Actually right now, that sleep sign is definitely a good suggestion. I can use some of that. Heck I can use a lot of that.

I'm right with you. We were relocated in 2004 to Va and lived in Glen Allen. Yes the mountains and the beach are a reasonable distance. I must say though they are not the Adirondacks! For really great beach vacation we go to Emerald isle, NC and stay in a condo right on the beach. Way cheaper than Montauk.
We loved Va as well as our kids.
Unfortunately relocated again to the midwest. Kids won't move out of Va. Miss them and Va terribly. Would never think to move back to LI.
