Better than Westbury, but you depending on kids age have to be wary of the Latino gang factor. They have vans of them roaming outside around the schools looking to distribute drugs and other things.

LOL Are you serious with this? I gotta be honest this is one of the most abstract and strange claims I've heard in relation to the scourge of Latino gangs on Long Island. I actually drew a little picture to capture the essence of your post and hopefully make people think about how ludicrous that scene must be (no offense, but I can't possibly imagine that's really going on), but according to nancythereader it had to be deleted because it was "somewhat racist and insulting", even though the intention was the polar opposite of that.

Carle Place is usually considered a pretty good, small district....I think it's overwhelmingly white as well, as is Carle Place itself.

Really? unbelievable the racism that will jump onto any thread!

As far as Sachem new Super doing nothing. It seems his deal was too sweet and is now in it for the ride. It is a shame too since he was a great principal. Our board need to really start to care about the Special Ed Dept. Only one member really cares.

I lived on Long Island for 37 years and lived in what was considered one of the lesser school districts on Long Islanmd (Central Islip) and had friends who lived in Roosevelt, (Nassaus county's worst). I also had friends who lived in Massapequa Park, Roslyn, and Sachem, all districts which were ranked at the top of the lists. These ranking were based on test scores which do not tell the real story all the time. On the street where I lived there were approximately 35 kids who all went to CI High School. 1 dropped out, 1 got pregnant. Of the other 33 who graduated 4 went into the military 28 went to college and 1 got married. Of those 28, 27 graduated from schools such as , Duke, Harvard, Standford Hamptom Institute, NYU, NY Polytec,Howard,Columbia, to name a few. There are now 2 doctors, 2 lawyers, 4 business owners, several educators and 1 politician(heaven help him). This was typical of my neighborhood. However many of my kids friends, in CI and some in the better school districts, many of whom came from well to do homes dropped out at an arlarming rate, becoming addicted to new cars and clothes and the fun life, their parents unaware of what their kids were doing. This is only a testament that it was not really the school system but the home system that failed. If a child has the capacity and the willingness to learn , AND a home support system, it matters very little where he goes to school. Also statiscally the crime rate was fairly close., not enough to weight on determining the better school. If a child does not do the work another school will not make him or her a better student, only MOM and Dad can do that.
I agree with you BUT, the better teachers are going to want to go to where there is (1) more money and (2) more prestige. If you are hiring from a top school, you will get many more applications and the process will be a lot more stringent. In top LI schools you don't have weak/strong departments, everyone is top notch, otherwise they would not have made it through to tenure. So, your kids will get the best teachers at the best schools.

Now, what goes on at home is important. If a kid attends one of the "best" schools but comes from a broken home, that child won't do well. If the kid comes from an intact and supportive home environment, the child will have a much greater chance of doing well.

I'm admittedly nostalgic for Oceanside which seems to do pretty well by this standard. However, Syosset is better (in terms of public schools) and I know that.
I didn't include the really small high schools.

Baloney. It just a reflection of which is the richest and whitest district.

If you bussed all the kids from Hempstead to Cold Spring and you bussed all the kids from Cold Spring to Hempstead, Hempstead would have the highest % of kids going to college and Cold Spring would have the lowest %.

The biggest factors in student success are genetics, dedication from the parents, dedication from the student him/herself, and peer pressure. The school itself makes a significant difference if all other things are equal, and parents are definitely doing the right thing by trying to put their child in a superior district (shows that they care, above all), but if a Hempstead kid didn't care about school or planned to graduate, sending him to Cold Spring isn't going to make him a college student, especially if you surround him/her with the same bad influences that they had in their old district.
