Bohemia
Ok, we've been looking on the south shore of the island, had it down to the babylon/west islip area and the sayville area and our realtor just threw us for a loop and showed us a house in Bohemia. The house was beautiful!!! But don't know a thing about Bohemia, can anyone offer some insight. I do knw its Connetquot schools. Really appreciate any insight!
Thanks

I worked in Bohemia for several years. It is bordered by Vets Hwy, Lincoln Ave, Connetquot park and a smidgeon of it is south of Sunrise. The people I met in the area were a mix of blue collar and management types, as well as small business owners. Very family friendly.
There are some horse properties and quite a large amount of commercial properties; most centered around the industrial park north of Church, east of Lakeland. There are two trailer parks south of Church, an apartment complex off Lakeland just north of Sunrise. The trailer parks are very well kept.
There's no distinct downtown as you would find in towns such as Babylon Village or Sayville. You do have access to all manner of shopping, a public library, several houses of worship.
Depending on where you are in Bohemia, you might have some airplane noise. It was bad closer to Vets around Ocean Ave.
The $64,000 question: Would I live in Bohemia? Yes, I would consider it.

For those who may not be familiar with Bohemia
For those who may not be familiar with Bohemia:
Bohemia is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the east-central part of the Town of Islip, in the southwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Bohemia in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma; on the east by the Hamlet of Holbrook; on the south by the Hamlet of Sayville and the Hamlet of Oakdale; and, on the west by the Hamlet of North Great River and the Hamlet of Central Islip.
The Hamlet of Bohemia has a different border than does the "Bohemia, NY 11716" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Bohemia, NY 11716" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Bohemia and a place can have other than a "Bohemia, NY 11716" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Bohemia): places that have a "Bohemia, NY 11716" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Bohemia are in the Hamlet of Holbrook and the Hamlet of Sayville; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Bohemia with an "Islip Terrace, NY 11752" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I agree that the only problem is airplane noise if you are close to the airport otherwise a very nice town.

I lived in Oakdale for about 10 years and have serveral good friends that live in Bohemia. Its a nice area. The neighborhood near the high school gets alot of traffic & the plane noise is moderate over there, plus the deer from the park jump the fences & eat alot of landscaping. I think the areas just north of Sunrise east of Locust are nice. Its very easy to commute from Bohemia.

I like it. There isn't any downtown, true, but you're only a short drive from Sayville and Patchogue if you want downtowns. Connetquot SD is often overlooked on these boards...people compare it to places like Sachem and Middle Country..it's actually significantly better according to the stats.

thanks so much everybody. it is so overwhelming when you are relocating. we had our search set to the babylon/west islip area and then our realtor threw in this monkey wrench on a area I knew nothing about. Your input is invaluable!!! The house is on Karshick St. Not too sure where that lies with the streets and such you all mention. I have to look at a map.
Thanks again for your help.
