Also, 30 years maybe is too long, but what about 25 years?

Also, I guess my question is more about the fact that cops don't have to contribute to their pensions while all other state employees do. Why not just have everyone contribute?
They were negotiated separately, but obviously anyone who isn't a cop believes that 0% pension contribution is absurd and needs to be changed.

The issue of pension contributions is not a collective bargaining issue. Pension contributions rates are set by the state according to the Tier. Police and Fire have been placed in either Tier 1 or Tier 2 (Tier 2 began with police and fire personnel hired on or after July 1, 1973) according to state law; there are no member contributions for those tiers.

So if it's not collectively bargained, who decides which tier (and therefore what contribution) police and firefighters are placed into?

That's the issue..I think teachers are up to tier 4 and they are talking about creating a tier 5, so somehow somewhere the police and firefighters didn't get pushed up while other public workers did.

The military doesn't contribute to their 20 year retirment either.

As they shouldn't... do your basic soldiers make 96k a year after 5 years?

Teachers have to work until they are 55, but they contribute to their pension for only the first ten years. As a teacher , I never paid anything toward health benefits , however.

I didn't know that police and firemen did not have the same tiers.

I work for NY Power Authority and that is the same situation we are in regarding age, tier and contribution. Anybody hired since the early 1980s is Tier 4 (Tier 3 & 4 aren't very different). We are given flex credits towards our healthcare. Until recently it was enough to exactly cover "mid-plan" type health and dental with all other things coming out of pocket. As costs have escalated, we're now being asked to kick in towards the medical and dental.

Read my post again. Since July of 1973, all police and professional firefighters in New York State (outside of NYC, which has its own pension system) have been placed in Tier 2. This is state law (or at least it was until Patterson disapproved the bill that would continue the practice, which is what this whole thread is about). Those hired before July of 1973 were placed in Tier 1. There are no member contributions required for either of those tiers.

The new proposed legislation would create a Tier V for police and fire personnel and would apparently change current retirement provisions.

As they shouldn't? non-commissioned officers deployed overseas are making more than that and it is tax free.
