I'd recommend the village of Malverne - very nice. I know people there who have complained about the schools, not sure if that has any affect on price of homes, but Malverne is still a very nice area.

While i agree malverne is very nice, and the schools are mediocre, the taxes are sky high.

Is there a way to compare LI schools to other state schools?

That's what I mean! There is no discount for living in a mediocre school district. The taxes are still too high. The homes may cost a little less some places, but not low enough to justify choosing a cruddy school district over a fair one. (Actually in the case of Malverne the home prices are NOT discounted because the area itself is very attractive and so are many of the homes.)

People have posted about that in the past, but I can't remember what they cited. Perhaps someone out there remembers or knows?

To my knowledge there is no direct way to compare schools from state to state. I really dont believe all the "LI schools are better than Texas schools talk". You get out what you put in. Period.

The op's question was IF SCHOOL DISTRICT DIDNT MATTER. There are some areas that are nice, but schools are so-so. I think thats what they were asking.

I know. I just think that school district does matter because the crappy ones aren't necessarily any cheaper. The OP (as he admitted elsewhere in this thread) is trying to figure out if living in a bad school district because you won't use the schools (no kids or kids in private school) would result in significant savings on home cost and property taxes. It doesn't give such a steep discount to be worth it.

On another thread someone mentioned a "best schools list" in the media and said their school on LI was number 700 and that the #1 school was in Virginia. For the taxes we pay, LI should occupy numbers 1-126 of that list.
