I took out parts of the deck and filled the hot-tub to find out the location of the leak. I saw water gushing out a pipe, and it turned out to be a drain valve. I closed it, filled it up, ran it for a day and found no leaks. Everything seems to be fine!
The people winterizing my spa told me there was a leak, and pointed to the water coming out. But it turned out to be from the drain pipe with the valve opened. He had opened the deck and was doing something before I got there.. and then he said it will cost 1200$ to fix the leak. I balked.. told him to close it and had practically given up on the tub. So either the guy is an idiot, or a crook trying to con 1200 from me. I would go with crook.. I feel furious.. you just cannot trust anyone anymore.
To the hot-tub specialist, do you open up the drain valve after you winterize the tub? I am trying to confirm that the drain valve was opened only to fool me.
The water still went down an inch after I kept the tub on at 100F for a day.. but I am guessing that is due to evaporation. Or can this be a slow drip-drip leak? In general, how long does it take for the water from the tub to evaporate to half level?

We live on LI. You have to assume everybody is a crook. I had a long conversation with a limo driver during a funeral procession. The guy was a part time limo driver, formerly a full time plumber working with a particular service. He told me that plumbers working for this service rip-off close to 90% of the people they deal with by overcharging or charging them for things that don't need fixing. You should pretty much assume that anybody doing work for you or trying to sell you something is a thief, especially in the NYC metro area, where everyone glorifies the mafia ie unethical behavior, and getting one over on the next guy.
I would call and complian to his boss, assuming he works for a company. that would **** me off to no end that he can rob you like that, well, almost rob you.
Even if an employee is doing this, the boss is the one who ultimately gets paid.. so there is a good chance the boss is encouraging the employee to do this.
But I want to make sure I am not jumping to conclusions here. The drain could have been opened for winterizing.. though I am very suspicious since he said "water is gushing out" while I don't see any water "gushing".

$1200 to fix a leak on a hot tub? you were totally about to be taken to the cleaners.
The only way it could cost that much would be if the heater rotted out and had to be replaced. Crawling around in the dirt under a deck and repairing a broken pipe or valve doesn't cost $1200 bucks. Report these clowns.
Glad you found the problem.
Nope.. it is just stationary water. Remember, the water is at 100F, so there is constant mist/steam on top of the water.. even though there is cover, I can see the cover sweating from the bottom when I open it.
An inch of water a day is possible under the right circumstances, but I would crawl around under there again and make sure there are no other small leaks.
At 100F with a cover, it seems a bit excessive, but it just might be evaporation.
Usually you'll find excessive evaporation at the maximum temps, around 104F, especially without a cover.
So, just take another peak around and see if there are any other drips.
Being a small body of water, a drip on a hot tub is like a gash in a liner pool.
Good luck.
