Whats going on at the Huntington Townhouse? It was supposed to be a Lowe's, now it is full of yellow school buses. Looks dreadful...

It does look awful! Currently, Lowe's owns the property. Filing plans, getting the architectural drawings, permits, etc., etc., probably takes a considerable amount of time. Maybe they're renting the space in the meantime? There are posts on the fence, but you can't read them driving by.

[SIZE=3][SIZE=3][LEFT]I have taken a personal interest in the demise of the Huntington Townhouse, in that it was one of the first jobs I had back in the early 1970's when I worked there as a bartender for weddings and other catered affairs. I was only 18 years old at the time which was about two years before New York changed the drinking age to 21.

According to http://town.huntington.ny.us/agenda_pdf/672.pdf about the school buses:
Quote:
Fax received April 6, 2009 from Thomas C. Shea, Ed.D., J. D, Superintendent of South Huntington Union Free School District, regarding the Lowe’s Home Center Supervisor Zone Change Application # 2007-ZM-368. Writer is in favor of approving this Town Board zone application. The school has an agreement with Lowe’s that the districts Town Attorney school buses may be housed on the Lowe’s property while the Transportation Engineering Services Center for the district undergoes renovations.
The latest information on Lowe's zoning change request for the property is located here:
ENB - Region 1 Notices 6/3/2009 - NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation
Quote:
Suffolk County - The Huntington Town Board, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Lowe's Home Centers, Inc. Zone Change (2007-ZM-368) will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the removal of all of the C-10 Planned Motel District zoning and a portion of the R-5 Residence District zoning on the property and replace it with C-6 General Business zoning, which already covers a portion of the property. The end result will be an additional 14% of the site available for commercial use. The existing 114,720 square foot Huntington Townhouse building and parking lot will be demolished and replaced by a 184,911 square foot Lowe's home improvement store, one deck parking garage, and surface parking. The project will also require the closure and abandonment of Ackerly Court (northern portion of Iceland Drive), a Town road that currently divides the applicant's property into two portions. The project will require the applicant to make improvements along Jericho Turnpike (New York State Route 25), including traffic signal and intersection improvements. The project is located on the south side of Jericho Turnpike (NYS 25), on the west and east sides of Ackerly Court (Iceland Drive) in South Huntington, Town of Huntington, New York .

Golly, I always thought that site would be perfect for a biggie-sized drive-thru pharmacy. There isn't one in the vicinity for tens of yards.

Does anyone have pictures of the Town House in its heyday? My grandfather grew up there in the early 1900's and I would love to have a picture of it! Thanks!
