These lists seem to be mostly populated by specialty schools. Do you think if we created special Science and Math High Schools on LI they wouldn't dominate those ratings? Taking the top 10% of students? You're comparing a HS like Jericho that is made up of students from all across the demographics and abilities, to specialized Science and Math High Schools in other areas. Look at all the NY City schools on the list..they're all specialty schools. It's not like you move into some area of the city and you automatically attend those schools. The criteria for these lists doesn't make sense to me. Of course if you take all the smartest kids from an area and put them in one school they will achieve far higher than a school where students attend because of where they live.

Best High Schools: Gold Medal List - US News and World Report
Oxford Academy?
Early College?
Talk about comparing apples to oranges. I wonder how the general population high schools in those areas compare to those on LI.

Yes Dman. I was thinking the same thing. Alot of these schools have the smartest kids within a 15 mile area. Im sure if we plucked the top students from every school on LI & made a school with those kids it would be a Gold ribbon also.

Considering that a general population school with no acceptance standards like Jericho or Cold Spring Harbro is on the list, we can assume that school would probably #1 with ease. Combine all the top kids from Syosset, Jericho, Cold Spring Harbor, Haborfields..into one district? This list is a joke.
Why is it that I noticed that within about 2 seconds of looking at the list, but the resident "cut the teachers salaries in half" crowd failed to? Maybe because they have a predetermined blind spot based on an agenda?
Are people stupid enough to think if you move into Manhattan, your kids just automatically go to Stuyvesant High School? Acceptance to those schools is highly competitive. Try combining the rankings of the local public school with these charter and specialty schools..then we'll get the real picture.

21 'gold' high schools are in NY state. 21% of the county's top 100 schools are in NY. No wonder some people call this the education belt

Massachusetts is #1 "overall". NY state is actually #11 on the list, percentage wise. There are 987 NYS High Schools.

There is a national level competition called intel talent search....
Science Project and Talent Competition — Intel
Check out the list of participants and winners.... I admit that this is a competition that is science and research oriented, but its pretty clear where the brightest in the nation are coming from.... no surprise here.... NY NY !!
I agree with everyone here that they should compare the "open enrollment schools" separately.... its not fair.... Does anyone know where can I look at a comprehensive list of open enrollment schools (not just top 100) and their performances ?

It's really difficult to get accurate information on this subject, and some people would rather not have it because it crushes their agenda.
Could you imagine if you set up 2 or 3 specialty/charter schools per county in Nassau and Suffolk..take the top 5 or 10% of students and put them up against these other specialty schools all over the country?
"Oh, I pay 8K dollars in Sachem SD for a school that ranks lower than ALBERT EINSTEINS SCHOOL OF RELATIVITY CHARTER SCHOOL in Bumbulerock, Colorado where they take the top 5% of kids in the entire state!! I want my money back!!! " It's comical.

Actually, US news lists if the school is open enrollment or not. If they have simply have a flag to search using this as a parameter, you will be able to compare just open enrollment. Bronx high school, Stuveyssant are all great schools, but they are not open enrollment.
I wonder why schools like Herricks do not figure in the US news. It should be atleast Bronze.. probably Silver. I think US news is missing some schools. Here are the average SAT scores for top high schools in 2004/2005. Best Schools
