Please Help Me Find an Apartment on Long Island!!!
I'm looking for my first apartment, and I'm hoping somone out there can help me with some referrals or ideas on where to start looking. I know it's going to be difficult to find what I want, but I'm sure it's out there...so please help me find it! Here's some info about me and what I'm looking for:
1) I'm a single 24 year old professional female
2) I have a small dog...a quiet 8 pound pomeranian (and yes, quiet poms do exist!)
3) I am looking for a one bedroom apartment, preferrably in a nice complex of some sort (something along the lines of an Avalon community -without the Avalon price!- or a nice garden apartment complex), not an accessory apartment
4) Needs to be in a nice neighborhood
5) The closer I can be to the Nassau/Suffolk border (where I work), the better
Okay, so there's the basics. I was hoping to spend between 800-1200 per month...I realize that this is Long Island and "affordable" is generally not an adjective used to describe this area, but there's got to be something nice out there for decent and hardworking young people like me. So...help me out, people!

I've tried that. Not having much luck. I'm finding places but either they have no reviews, or if they have reviews, they're mostly bad because the people who have been pissed off and jaded by the management are the ones who care enough to remember to get online and talk about their experience in the apartment complex. Some don't have pics and the ones that do usually don't reflect what the place actually looks like in reality...Which is why I'm asking people to provide info relating to their positive experiences or info based on personal knowledge.

Where exactly is the job? It's a big area to choose from without knowing that and I would not even try to offer up a suggestion otherwise. Did you want to live near work, have a commute, not be close to a certain thing? For example, I teach and I know many who would not want to live where they teach....Anything more specific would help.

You can rent a basement apartment for that amount... not exactly the best living situation but it's doable.

Try looking on New York apartments and apartment reviews - ApartmentRatings.com
As for your price range, you won't find that in an apartment complex. In a house apartment maybe and that is if the owner wants you to have a pet. As for complexes, they have pet fees so be prepared to shell out more.
Also, go and physically look at them as well. Ask to see the apartment. Be wary of those who won't allow you to.

Keep in mind- some owners (esp. if you are renting a place in someone's house) don't always want to rent to young people or people with pets. I knew a guy who was looking to rent his apartment to only people 30 and over with stable incomes. I think that is rare but keep in mind...esp. the dog thing...pets make it tougher.

I work near exit 48 on the LIE (Melville/Plainview area). I'd like to stay as close to that area as possible.
Does anyone have any experience with the Avalons in Glen Cove? I'm thinking I can probably split a 2 bedroom with two other roommates (using the den as a 3rd bedroom) but...one of my potential roommates also has a small dog (a chihuahua), so I'm not sure how open they'd be to renting to three twentysomethings with two small dogs lol.
