The reason that there are many communities (we're talking villages and hamlets, not towns) that people are unfamiliar with is because these villages and hamlets are in one or more differently-named ZIP Code postal zones.

For example, the Hamlet of Fort Salonga, partly in the Town of Huntington and partly in the Town of Smithtown, is partly "Northport, NY 11768" and partly "Kings Park, NY 11754" mailing address.

What about Poquott, East Yaphank (I am not sure if this locale truly exists, or if someone just put a sign up one day to differentiate themselves from Shirley), and South Manor?

I had a Pt the other day and I ask where he's from. His wife responds with East Yaphank. So I said "oh you're from Shirley me too." You would think I asked her to eat a turd sandwich. "NO I SAID EAST YAPHANK!" She then follows with "we have a sign and everything!" I said "oh really where is your post office?" She then informs me that they use the one on Montauk Hwy. Read=the shirley post office. Gets me wondering if I put a sign on my lawn "Sickofnyc99land" does it make it official?

Usually imagining ones town is the sign of troubled surrounds.
