The Department store that you're probably refering to is A&S. And yes, Roosevelt Field did contribute to the demise of downtown Hempstead, and most likely other downtowns in Nassau. Losing those businesses killed off a significant % of the tax base. I remember when I was a kid (I'm 44) my relatives from the Carribean would visit and loved to walk the downtown to shop. I always looked forward to it.

I do agree that there still are areas of Hempstead that are still OK. Usually populated by hard-working families who just want to live in peace; Like most others. It's a shame that there are those who would prey on these good people. They are so many reasons why things are like this, mostly economic and social. I don't have any simple answers to the problems there, but nothing will change unless the current residents force the local politicians to take real action. We'll see if that ever occurs.
