Not scientific but according to Maquest, Garden City to JFK is 14.69 miles. Great Neck to LGA is 13.63 miles.

Mapquest is based on surface routes. I don't think the planes route via the local streets. Not only does the traffic suck but the planes can't fit under the bridges and stoplights.

No preferential treatment...LGA the planes land on the southeastern runway... so there higher because they have to circle around yet before they make the decent to approach....
Come stand on the overpass at 81st and the GCP if you want to see how they come in, it'll help you see the reasoning for the height..

Those planes aren't even that low, I've definitely seen them fly lower over Wantagh/Levittown....next time I'm at my parent's house I'll sit in the driveway with my brother's digital video camera for an hour and try to film one.

Are you serious Johninwestbury.... less than a 1000' i'll bet it's higher then that..
I want to go to my parents or brothers houses now so i can take a picture of the tail number with no zoom.... If i get the right angle from the park i can probably get a head in a window.... please stop complaining over nothing, seriously the FAA isn't changing anything ..... over 60 years now for JFK, and 70 years for LGA...
Low flying... People are laughin there asses off on the comments in that video all thru queens and brooklyn near either LGA or JFK.. probably saying someone just woke up
Im gonna send your video into americas funniest videos... "why do they have to fly so low" that was priceless.
This thread is a waste of bandwidth...

I was at LGA today, sitting in my car as I waited for a family member's plane to take off. The parking lot was adjacent to the end of the tarmac. I sat there for 80 minutes. Planes took off and passed over the lot approx every 2-3 mins; most of them were smaller than the jumbo jets. I've heard worse noise on Lakeland & 454 by ISP.
Is it possible that JFK is getting more jumbo jets and LGA less because of the fact that LGA arrivals and departures require a larger number of planes to fly over densely populated areas?
I am NOT stating that the approach to JFK is not densely populated, I am noting that there are more approaches over water (the Atlantic) before passing over land as opposed to LGA which borders a narrow point of the Sound.
Trying to learn..don't go tearing into me.

We should form a coailtition to preserve QOL on LI. Change can be made if the following groups unite:
- People who moved close to an Intrnational Airport and complain about airplane noise.
- People who moved to Eastern Suffolk and complain they don't have comparable LIRR service to when they lived in Nassau
- People who bought houses next to th LIRR train tracks and complain about the train noise
Join forces! Unite for a better LI for all, well not all, but a better LI fror ME

As I've posted many times. I live in Garden City Park, not exactly near any airport. When I moved in a while back, the planes were infrequent and irrelevant. However, sometime over the last 3 years the planes started coming by more frequently and it became more noticeable. Now, I cannot talk on my cell phone in my backyard because when a plane comes by I have to wait 20 seconds because the noise is so loud. I'm not saying this is going to kill me or anything. But the fact of the matter is this noise is not something I knew I was getting into when I bought my house because it was not there!
This is a new issue. Yes, if I moved into Valley Stream I'd know going into it that I was close to JFK. But I do not live in Valley Stream yet the noise is worse than my brother deals with who does live in Valley Stream!
