It's very easy to joke and dismiss something that you have no clue about. Yes, the jet noise isn't the end of the world but who wants to hear it non-stop throughout the day? Let them change the flight patterns so that they fly directly over your house and let's see what you think then.

Sean,

This post deserves a hearty FU. You don't know my personal situation or that of others. No one said I sit around listening to planes for 7 hours, but my wife can tell me when they began, and if they are flying through midnight, it MIGHT be fair to assume someone might be sleeping. Don't you think?

Noise pollution is quality of life issue, whether you like it or not. Yes, it isn't the end of the world, but if people can't OPEN THEIR WINDOWS at night because of the noise...if their house shakes even when the windows are closed...or they can't hear each other from 3 feet away in their own backyard....it is a serious quality of life issue.

Can someone tell me why the FAA thinks having planes flying lower over residential areas is a good thing? Fumes? Exhaust from the planes? Then people wonder about cancer clusters? Noise? We are surrounded by water, seriously, planes need to make a loop over homes, somedays as far north as Manhasset, so that they can get into position? Noise is a quality of life issue. That is why there are laws to the effect and why if you have a party going on late into the night, the police are called. With airlines charging fuel surcharges, what I don't get is how they are fine with having to circle for at least an extra half hour. Maybe because of the FAA flight patterns, that is why we do have to pay the surcharge. It is a waste. The funny thing is, I have emailed the FAA about the new flight patterns and their response is that their have been no changes. 90% of aircraft tragedies occur during take off and landing. I don't see how it is safe to have a plane flying at 2000 or less feet over 20 miles across Nassau county from North to South is safe.

Default Leaving LI because of plane noise

HI,
Just joined because I wanted to post - My family is leaving LI because of this jet noise. My baby can't sleep at night, and we have to keep the windows closed otherwise we all wake up. He also has nightmares constantly. I, myself, have a hard time falling asleep at night and then functioning at work in the morning. My family has lived in this house for many years, and this is NOT something that's been going on forever. It began in recent years and is getting progressively worse. We cannot keep our windows open ever, because no one can sleep. I won't say what town we're in because our house is on the market!!! It's unbelievable you pay so much in taxes and this is what you get in return. Nassau county takes all your money, and then they even want to take your quality of life. Can't wait to move! Counted 5 jets in a 7 minute period last night! Then just stopped counting because it just kept going, and going, and going...

I agree on both counts.

Sorry dude, I am not sympathetic to your airplane troubles whatsoever. I seriously can't imagine anyone I know in real life giving half of a crap about it....really, it boggles my mind.

I live in the flight path, I have lived here for the majority of 26 years. I see the planes, I hear them, I just can't wrap my head around what a pampered, cushy, detached-from-reality life it would take someone to lead in order to be "upset" about it. You're obviously not alone, though....I wonder where all these folks came from, cuz I never met anyone this timid and frail on LI before. Somehow I doubt you're all native to the area...

You can go ahead and write letters to the FAA and try to "rally the troops" or whatever. I'm not trying to stop you!! Hell, if anyone wants to follow the lead of "Leaving_LI_now" and find someplace soft, quiet and desolate where you don't have to deal with other people or their machinations....BE ME GUEST!! I'll buy you a free manicure!!!!

Where you live it's not as bad as the GCP/GC/NHP area. I've lived in both places. The planes are lower in the GCP/GC/NHP area and MUCH louder.

Sean,

56 Fighter is exactly right. You clearly don't understand the issue. Planes coming in off the Atlantic, before starting their loop over Long Island, are much higher in the air at the point in time. Frankly, if I were you in N. Wantagh, I wouldn't notice it either. I used to live in Plainview up until December, and barely noticed them because they were so high.

But, when 747's are 1900-2000 ft above your house, you will definitely hear it and it will wake you up. Now, maybe you are a tough guy bad ass original Long Islander. Good for you.

I guess you'll just have to sympathize with softies like us that don't have your intestinal fortitude.

it must be nice to have the ability to know exactly what's happening in a community without actually...you know....ever going there.

I can understand relocating on LI if a person has a noise issue/complaint. To claim that is why you are leaving the region tells me that there is a bigger, underlying problem -- which you've written in your post: taxes. The jet noise appears to be one of the many straws which ultimately broke the camel's back for you.

I don't argue with anyone about jet noise -- working in Bohemia near MacArthur was enough to convince me it can be very bad.
