Try living in Western Valley Stream. The planes look like they are trying to land in my driveway!

I sympathize with you. I really do. But, when someone purchases a home in Valley Stream or Howard Beach, they at least have the expectation that there will be aircraft noise. It's a given.
When someone purchases in Central Nassau, they aren't expecting a line of planes over their house. It catches most people off guard, deteriorates their quality of life, and jeopardizes their home values.

I'm in Franklin Square, right along the line the planes follow. I enjoy hearing the planes. The worst time was after 9/11.....the eerie silence of having no planes flying was weird.
Considering you are less than 20 miles away from 2 major airports and a minor one, didn't you think you'd hear planes?
Now in terms of jeopardizing home values, you might be exagerating a tad. Haven't seen any GC properties being reduced due to airplane noise pollution.

I thought I'd hear planes once in a while. What I didn't except was a row of planes every 2 minutes for 7 straight hours.
As I said in my original post, I have no problem with some flights over Nassau. The problem begins when only certain neighborhoods bear the brunt of the burden because the FAA is too damn lazy to vary the flight paths a bit.

Are you sure its just because of laziness? I'm not a flight controller, LOL, but I thought planes were sent OUT of Kennedy via the water route because it is the noisiest part of the flight and coming in to JFK from the water would come into conflict with those planes leaving.

FOPT,
They come over LI because of airport crowding...too many planes landing at once. Again, I understand that.
What I'm arguing is that they take the same exact path over land everytime they make a visual landing. If they flew east or west 1/2 mile and varied their approach into JFK, the same neighborhoods wouldn't be abused everytime.

Are you exaggerating or does your house really shake? I live close to JFK (10 minute drive in no traffic) and that has never happened to me.
I knew what I was getting into and expected to hear airplane noise and didn't mind the idea since I also had the advantage of living very close to JFK. I can understand people who didn't anticipate it and who are in Westbury, GC, etc., being surprised and dismayed though when it happens to them. To me it hasn't been that bad. When the windows are closed I don't hear it. So all winter I have no problem. When the windows are open, I can hear them, but it doesn't bother me unless it is a cloudy night and they are flying low because of the clouds or the noise is just trapped in all the clouds and makes it louder. Then yeah, it makes me "pause" in whatever I am doing.

I'm about 4 blocks west of Nassau Blvd, north of Stewart. The visual approach being used into runway 22L takes the planes straight over GC Park, over the GC High School, over the north part of the Estate section, diagonally through our neighborhood, then over the GC Country Club, over the St. Anne's Church area, and then through to Franklin Square.
This is the path that is used on sunny warm days. It is infuriating because you hear the jets roar like some sort of WW2 bombing drill.
|
I'm by St. Anne's. My sister used to live in Stewart Manor and it was really bad over there too, that was 1985-1989. This is NOT a recent problem.

I'm sure it must be very hard to paint your toenails with those big stinky jumbo jets making their WOOOOOSH noise. Keep on fighting the good fight, no man should ever have to have his episode of The View interrupted!!

Yet another example of having no clue. First you live in "north Wantagh" and are not under the flight path- second, the planes don't stop flying on weekends - third, more reverse snobbery, since we live in GC, we must not be able to "handle it".
THe planes are going over every 2 minutes at 7:15 as I type this. Ironically me kids even asked me today - where are those planes GOING? they are so LOW!!

I Love LI -- Yes, when a 747 comes low enough, the house does vibrate. (It's a tall home.)
Twingles--I know the area well. I'm a St. Anne's Parishoner. Unfortunately, your area is victimized badly too because by the time they get to you they are even lower.
I knew for sure they'd fly over us tonight. Why? It's Friday night. All the European flights get dumped over us on Friday nights, especially when the weather is clear. They are usually the visual approach to runway 22L right now as I type this. There is no deviation in their path so we'll get this for another 5 hours.
