THe planes are going over every 2 minutes at 7:15 as I type this. Ironically me kids even asked me today - where are those planes GOING? they are so LOW!!

If I'm reading these stupid flight tracker images that have been posted on here a billion times, they're the same planes. They come in over the Atlantic and turn west over central Nassau...but they do fly higher over me.
Reverse snobbery? If that's what you want to call it....I'm certainly not shedding any tears over the plight of you poor, unfortunate souls dreading the wicked scourge of Pratt & Whitney afterburners. In fact, now I do notice these planes flying overhead more often...and it makes me happy knowing that somewhere in Garden City, someone is having a panic attack over it!
Write your letters, complain about it on the internet, make bumper stickers and hand them out at the next PTA meeting. It will do nothing! Hopefully, you'll all wise up and realize we've got more than a few bridges leading off LI for greener pastures....it's the only solution.

My parents live in Old Westbury and the flyovers are constant. Nice weather, crappy weather, it doesn't seem to matter. They are low, loud and seem endless. Here's a pic I took of one flying over the yard on Memorial Day weekend.
The same ones that fly over their place continue on right over East Williston and Roslyn Heights also.

I am in Stony Brook and we get the Hamptons and CT commuter type planes (in/out of NYC & ISP) as well as helicopters into University Hospital. It was completely bizarre not to hear or see air traffic in the days after 9/11.

Exactly, because we didn't move by an airport. Its not like someone who moves near the tracks then complains about train noise.
The FAA forced this routing upon us, and given the Redesign, we haven't even seen the worst of it.

Well if you look at takeoffs on the flight tracker, you'll see they are only noisy close to the airport, because most airliners increase in altitude quite rapidly. Most takeoffs from JFK are already at or more than 10,000 feet up by 7 or 8 miles into the route.
Takeoffs already fly over Nassau, but they aren't noticed because of the high altitude. Arrivals probably used to be at higher altitudes as well, which is why they weren't noticed until recently.
Safety should be #1 and speed/efficiency 2nd, and both those would either have the planes flying higher (more time to make the airport in case of engine stall) and more direct (saving time and fuel).
But the FAA seems to think that lining up planes over central Nassau at low altitude is good. But for who?

Again, I'm not a professional in this regard, but don't planes need to fly relatively low to make a gradual descent landing at the airport? Can they safely drop 8,000 feet in a few miles? I mean they're big planes, 747s and such, not the Harrier planes that can land like a helicopter.

Yeah you guys up in Old Westbury seem to get it a but worse then here in Westbury, alot of the planes fly just to our north or south.
Its just a constant parade, like tonight, just one after another. How can the FAA say this is safe flying, having so many planes so close together in a heavily populated area.
They all seem to converge on Garden City though, they have it the worst by far and they are still 10 miles from the airport.

Let them put the takeoffs over Nassau and the landings over the ocean.

Yup, I have to agree with that. Yes, I knew it was there before I bought.

Court Refuses To Block New Jet Routes In Northeast - wcbstv.com
There was just a CBS news report about the very issue discussed on this thread. I found the above link on the wcbstv.com website, but not the actual video report.
