I'm about to begin a big campaign against the abuse of the FAA and Port Authority against residents of Western Nassau County.
Through a lot of research and study of flight patterns I've been able to gather that the FAA is allowing the same VISUAL approach to runway 22L every single time. Essentially, the same neighborhoods in Westbury, Garden City Park, Garden City, and Franklin Square are getting plane noise dumped on them when the weather is at its BEST.
So, on clear days the big jumbo jets come in at about 1,900 feet. The problem is that there is no deviation in their vector (or flight path). If they were to come in on approaches that varied 1/4 mile here and there, it would help so much.
You might think that they can't deviate...but the fact is on this approach they have to make a hard swing to the left just to land at 22L...so this visual isn't done for approach angle.
----------
Here is a YOUTUBE video giving you a sample of these planes over our neighborhoods. The noise in the video doesn't do it justice. It's much louder in person and sounds like a WW2 raid.
We need to stand up and fight this and I'm recruiting others on here to help.
I ride the LIRR through Garden City and sometimes I see 2-4 planes on JFK Approach just while I am on the train! They are flying very low as well. I've wondered about the impact with noise and quality of life. I've actually played a game with myself where I can identify the livery of the plane given how close it is. Worse, you are dealing with lots of wideboy aircraft coming in as JFK gets lots of 777s, 747s, A330s/340s and even some A380s.
That being said, you may have a tough time getting this changed The NYC airspace (in particular JFK/LGA) is very very crowded and what happens at LGA affects JFK which is why JFK can't use all of its runways often time (and why evening rush at JFK is one big clusterfuc*k). FAA airspace redesign involves quite a bit of red tape.
It really is amazing. On a Friday evening from 5pm to midnight we could get about one jet every 2 minutes. It's disgusting. Sounds like an air raid at times and no one does anything.
The FAA and Port Authority don't need to deviate their visual approach all that much. If they could only shift it a 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile here and there, they'd spread the impact of the noise much more. It wouldn't come anywhere NEAR the LGA paths which are still very far away (I've studied them).
What this boils down to is the guys at JFK tower, FAA and Port Authority being too LAZY to come up with variations in the flight path. At the same time, the residents of Garden City and other towns haven't studied up enough about this to combat them.
That's going to change now. I'm broadcasting their dumping of planes all over YOUTUBE now and sending it to all local Congressmen/women and Senators.
I've lived in GC for 12 years....my sister has lived here for 20 and my DH his whole life. It's been like this forever, and my 95 year old neighbor has been trying to do something about it for almost forever. Good luck, is all I can say.
This routing is ridiculous. The other night it was constant roaring and jet whine, every 90 seconds or so up until midnight. I look at the flight tracker and see how many of these planes actually fly out over the ocean over Southern Brooklyn, then go south to offshore of southern NJ, then turn around and head back north and come in over SE Nassau and the Babylon area, head north then turn over Plainview and Hicksville to the NW, then they turn from NW to SW right over Westbury, sometimes a bit further north toward Roslyn, then over Garden City. They are low, just like you said, usually getting to 2000 feet by Hicksville.
This routing is so stupid. Not only does it force Nassau county residents to endure constant jet noise, not only will it put Nassau residents at risk of life and property loss in the event of a plane crash, but it also adds flying time (its about 20-30 minutes) over just coming in over the ocean.
And for those that claim its only when winds are from the south, I've seen them use that routing when winds are northerly as well.
Sadly, they probably wont listen, until a plane crashes into a residential neighborhood or shopping mall, and hundreds of people on ground are killed as houses and malls burn.
The FAA could care less about the safety of people on the ground. I'm even suprised how close some of these jets come to flying over Manhattan. I'm just suprised the insurance companies haven't gotten wind of this, because they will certainly raise rates when they find out how high the risk of property loss due to a plane crash is.
All it takes is one more bird strike, a metal fatigue fracture (as the plane does acrobatics over Westbury), for a disaster.

No it wasn't, they used to use the ocean approach until a couple of years ago. Been living in Westbury for 8 years now, and the problem didn't start until 2007 or so, and it just keeps getting worse.
Come to my parents house and grandparents house, i'll show you low 2,000' pfffft you'll never cry again....
Nowadays these planes are so quiet it's not even anything to ***** about...
30yrs in HB, and im 3rd gen, my parents and there parents all grew up there.... 2000' ft, and during perfect weather and your complaining...try 150' and near misses on low ceiling days, 150' all day and night long...
Never bothered any of us, how can a plane at 2,000' bother you...
You people sound like the people out east.... oh the 3 or 4 helo's are ruining everything....
Find something that really impacts your life...
I got it. corrupt govt, how about taking that on... nope no one will dare try to do that, this generation is apathy stricken..
The planes are still coming in over my parents and grandparents house more then 1 under 5 minutes, and still going out over them...
Mc, lq, jfk have gotten busier over the years.....or you just noticed this.
So coming from 3 generations of watching JFK from my parents steps johninwestbury... Yes it has been the same... you must be bored and just noticed, i noticed the engines are much much quieter for the majority of the planes... much quieter then we grew up with at a elevation of 150' just before touching down on the runway...
A plane did crash right on rockway blvd..coming in from east to west...so like i said johninwestbury...been going on and you just haven't been paying attention...that crash was over 30 years ago if i remember correctly should have been like 1970or right around there...
Forgot about rockaways, the plane leaving jfk and crashed , forgot that 1 too i see.....
I have seen more 747's come out of low ceilings just miss houses in HB, or pop out of fog at 500 mph at 100'
2000' c'mon stop now...
