Completely censoring your childrens life?
I am going to post a link to another thread on the forum, i hope thats allowed. Someone from Alaska (figures), posted about how they decided to disconnect the the cable tv and get rid of their kids xbox 360, because they say there is nothing but drugs, sex, violence, and homosexuality on tv and video games. Now, I dont have any kids, but I am 28, which i think makes me old enough to be able to raise kids, yet im not that far removed from being a kid myself. I think this thinking is completely rediculous. You can see my posts on the thread for how i feel. So check out the link, and discuss..

I just removed the TV from my 12 year old's room, with the one in the 15 year old's soon to follow. The XBox is in a neutral room.

Those are the kids that end up going crazy during college. Honestly, if you don't teach your kids about it. Chances are one of the kids at recess will.

I never allowed my kids to have a television in their rooms nor did I subscribe to HBO et. al. I have SAFE EYES on my computer that filters the sites young children may visit.

Too much censoring is counterproductive... You can't keep kids isolated forever.. They're too inquisitive..

Do not and will not allow TVs in the rooms nor will I put a computer anywhere but a neutral area. But that has as much to do with "guiding" (not censoring) what my children are exposed to as it does with trying to make sure we interact as a family without disappearing into our respective caves...especially since this will happen soon enough when they hit 13 .

I have a 10 year old. He knows about a lot of things. He Knows about gay and lesbians, racial tensions, drugs, cancer, you name it. Things have come up in life and they needed to be explained at the time.
i think you as a parent need to teach your kids about things and let them know the right and wrong. The lesson has to come from you, not the kids on the bus or in the neighborhood.
My son asks a lot of questions and I answer them honestly. You won't do your children any good by putting a bag over their head to shield them. When I got asked about sex, I broke out one of my old college anatomy books and we had a lesson.
I do monitor what is watched on tv and computer use is always supervised. Then again, kids will probably see something when you aren't around (like at a firend's house) and they are going to be curious.

In the past I would have said censoring kids life is bad but more and more I am thinking that kids that see less TV is good. I see home schooled kids that have less acess to TV seem to be much better off than kids that sit in front of TV all the time. I'm thinking that sheltered lives might be of some benefit
