I am in 100% agreement with you. The "fast and furious" movies really took things to a whole new level. Everyone long island guido kid thinks he's vin diesal... it's absolutely pathetic.

Kind of like Bullet with Steve McQueen did?

I guess... the difference between then and now is back then every house didn't have 4-5 cars... and there weren't nearly as many houses!

It's not about how fast the car is, it's about the competition. Even if they had a Honda Fit they will still be racing. They would just race a car of equal performance. As for the unsafe driving habits, I've seen people in clunkers drive like bats out of hell. It's all about the mentality of the individual.

The West Babylon High School always seems to have some smashed up wreck placed in front of the school to serve as a literally sobering reminder to the students of what their potential fate may be with drunken and/or unsafe driving.
Maybe a few more placed at schools and other places newly licensed young people congregate would be in order.

Not that I condone any type of street racing, but I can see the allure of drag racing being that it is a straight line from one point to another and there is no bumping or cutting people off. There is also a clear winner and loser. I do not see the allure in the newer form of racing on the streets and highways where there is no start or end point and the race is through traffic riddled streets or highways where they just cut in and out of traffic while also cutting each other off. I suppose it is the "thrill" of knowing they can wreck.
I do believe the more "hardcore" race types might not race as much on the streets if they had an available race track but there are many whom would just do both. I used to race in the Hamptons at the 1/4 mile track. I had a 1987 IROC Camaro which I did a lot of work to. I also was building a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass with a Pontiac 400 that came out of a 1969 GTO. I redid the rear, suspension, engine, transmission, etc. I had only to hook up the gauges and the fuel pump when they closed the track. My options were to either take it to Englishtown, New Jersey to race or race on the street. I decided to strip it down and sell the parts. I am sure there are a number of people whom used to race there that opted for using the streets instead though.
I guess we also have to consider the fact that there are many people whom are oblivious to danger regardless of whether or not they are racing. I work on old cars from the 60's, 70's and 80's and tow cars often with my Excursion and trailer. I often pick up cars from other states. I can't tell you how many times I have been cut off on the highway with my 10,000 pound Excursion towing my 2,500 pound 24 foot equipment trailer with a car that weighs at least 3,500 on it. People seem to have no idea that a truck with a heavy load on it simply will not stop as quickly as their car. I do have brakes on my trailer but it is still a lot of weight and requires more room to stop. I deliberately leave a larger space than normal between myself and the vehicle in front of me for this reason and numerous people take it as an easy spot to change lanes, dart into it and then hit there brakes right after cutting me off. It is truly ridiculous.
I guess my point is that there are and always will be irresponsible people of all ages whom will do stupid things with a vehicle on the street whether they have a big block V-8 engine or an electric car. All one can do is drive defensively and hope they are not the one whom gets taken out by an idiot.

It's not just the kids. Too many adults drive too fast and too recklessly. Kids learn from their parents.
