LI Native, no harm no foul! I didn't take offense at all, and I hope you didn't either! I just wanted to clear up the misconceptions people seem to have about East Massapequa. People go out of there way to say that area is not really "Massapequa" or really "Amityville". As for your mother's co workers, I can tell you that informally a lot of people still associate the area with Amityville, even people that live in the area. This is primarily because of the school district. And to be very honest, it is also because the demographic of the area is completely different than the rest of Massapequa. But if I offended you in any way, I sincerely apologize as that was not intended!

Understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland"

"Technical" only to a postal worker, I'm guessing.
What postal workers refer to as (postal) towns and some people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html and http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".

Aside from Islip Terrace, which is a hamlet in the Town of Islip and the now defunct Hamlet of Pinelawn, which concomitant with the 1990 federal census was split between the Hamlet of East Farmingdale and the Hamlet of Wyandanch, the other areas are neighborhoods in a village or hamlet, whereas the Hamlet of East Massapequa is not a neighborhood in the Hamlet of Massapequa..

I've lived right near our lady of lourdes church for almost all my life (23.5 years) and I am fascinated by all this. I always felt identity issues, having a massapequa park mailing address but not living in massapequa park, went to farmingdale schools but didn't live in farmingdale, and live a stones throw from the county border. However, ever since I found out that I am actually in the hamlet of East Massapequa, I feel like I've found myself, and the West amityville discussion is very interesting too.
I had no idea Pinelawn was divided up that way, actually.

LOL - I know exactly where you live - (know OLL church very well!). If you were to live right across the street from the church (i.e. where the Ctown shopping ctr is), you'd 'magically' be in the Amityville school district!
