Default Best time to go to the LI beach

South shore beaches.

I have found in the past that in early July, the water is still pretty cold, sometimes hard to even tolerate like putting your hand in the cooler to dig for a frosty beverage. Then in august when it has 'warmed' up a bit to be tolerable there are so many jellyfishes that you don't want to go in.

Is there a magic time to go. Like last week of july or something, where the conditions would be most favorable????

First thing in the morning. I've always tried to get there as early as possible and enjoy the quiet while it lasts. Just bring a blanket and maybe a sweat shirt as it can be a little chilly in the early AM.

The water temps don't reach 70 until late July/Early Aug...and peak at about 75 in Sept. We have found the best swimming is after labor day. Even better...all the summer folk have left :-)

September - the crowds are gone and the water is warmest.

I've lived on LI my whole life and believe it or not I've never seen a jellyfish on the south shore beaches.

The beaches are usually great on the South Shore except when jellyfish come. Also, if there is heavy rain or a thunderstorm, you should not go into the water for a couple of days as raw sewage and other waste pollutes the waters. 3 or 4 days after the rain it usually gets to a safe level, bacteria-speaking.

The best time to go is when its 85 deg. out. Simply park at field 5 and walk east for a couple hundred yards. And bring your binoculars!!!! : 0

I've seen them quite often...it seems like once a year or so there is a jellyfish kill and you'll see thousands of the little white ones dead on the beach.

I saw the nasty stinging pink ones on the sound last year...dozens of them. Yuck.
