Not at all. It is an hour to 110. The poster said that that it already takes them 45 minutes to get home and they can't stand it. 1 hour is on a GOOD day, with no accidents, no rubbernecking, no rain (chance that), no snow.
The truth is that the commute home from Melville to Rocky Point is probably equivalent to commuting to Westhampton on the South Shore. I worked with a guy at a job in Roslyn once who commuted to and from Westhampton every day. His commute was almost identical time-wise to a woman we worked with who lived in Mt. Sinai. Westhampton is what, 20 miles East of Mt. Sinai, leaving from the same point and taking the LIE until parting ways at 83?

Listen Dman,
Please stop lying.
You can rationalize your personal choices all day long.
I make very good time down Wm Floyd to anywhere.
(Westhampton too)
347 is useless.
NE Brookhaven is a great place to live ...and you know it.
For some living by the water on the North Shore worth that last mile, for others its Selden.
To each his own.
Best,
Crooks

Who lives in Selden?
Crooks, I've driven all the same roads you have, dozens if not hundreds of times. I've lived in about 10 different "towns" (cue Walter) in Suffolk from Northport West to Sound Beach. I know what rush hour traffic going up 83 is like, and I also know that while William Floyd is a nicer ride, it takes just as long if not longer. We're talking about driving with 10 MPH of the speed limit, not doing 80. It's a not a personal vendetta against any town..I LIKE your area more than many others on LI, but when someone comes on and says that don't want a long commute, and you tell them that commuting from Rocky Point to Melville isn't long...you're not giving them the truth. During rush hour, 1 hour to Melville from RP is a best case scenario.

Yea we looked aroung in RP and sound beach but the commute does seem a little long and weekend traffic is a killer as most of our families live near 347 (setauket/st james). Also I dont understand why there are nice new houses that we've looked at plopped in between 2 bedroom 80 year old bungalo's. It would just bother me to pay 380k for a house when the house next door is worth 150k. Ideally i'd like to be down by the water in old stony brook but thats about 300k over our budget..lol

Crooks...you know I love you like a long lost third cousin, but my Aunt makes the Sound Beach to Melville commute daily: 65 minutes. Rarely has it ever been shorter, and due to the recent rain it has been taking longer. It might also be based on what time you are out the door. She has to be at her desk by 8:30. To get back on your good side she does love where she lives .

There used to only be bungalows up there, that's why. That's part of the "charm" of that area and what makes it affordable to those who don't drive Range Rovers. With that afordability, you get some folks who are a bit rougher around the edges, which I don't really care about, it's just the friggin motorcycle noise.

Miller Place is nice, but I'd choose Stonybrook. It is more diverse, and 3V is a better schools district. Have you thought about Port Jeff village? They have great schools as well, and the taxes are lower than surrounding areas.

LOL. Welcome to Suffolk County. What you are seeing is old long island right next door to new long island. It took some getting used to for us as well. I am in a similar home with a similar neighbor. I would not be too concerned about it, as long as you are not the lone "white elephant" on the block. Good luck in your search. In the end you want good schools and good neighbors, regardless of everyone's square footage. Feel free to DM me if you have questions about the Smithtown area (no I am not a realtor, just a resident).

My husband commutes from Mt. Sinai to Melville. He car pools and uses 83 and 495. Drive time is about 50 to 60 minutes. He was driving by himself for a few months - drive time over an hour. The key is the HOV lane. He rarely takes 347 - almost never. The key is to car pool or get a hybrid car. Also, without the HOV lane, you have to leave Melville at 6 PM - home by 7 PM. Leave Melville at 5 PM - home by 7 PM. You will also get more house and land in Mt. Sinai and Miller Place. Less house in more of a "fixerupper" mode in Stony Brook/E. Setauket. There are differences in the communities, but it depends on what is important to you. Good Luck!

Ha ha!!! This is verbatim what I used to say when I worked in Nassau. leaving between 4:15 and 6 pm is a senseless time wasting act.
