I agree that the letter sections off Nicolls and Stony Brook Rd (as well as the University Heights section) offer better pricing, and family friendly neighborhoods.
I love the eclectic mix of people in my section of Stony Brook, the fact that there are many people outside walkiing, stopping and greeting their friends and neighbors. The proximity to the water and the boat ramp are plusses for those of us with boats, the SBYC is reasonably priced for social membership but the slip list is currently in the 120-130 person wait list. Stony Brook does have a nice mixture of housing choices from historic to new, and a blend of people from white collar to blue.
Walter Greenspan brings up a good point, too -- with the (pardon my Goyim ignorance -- correct me if I am wrong) word spreading about SB's Orthodox community, young Orthodox couples might very well start snapping up houses in the sections surrounding the SUSB, many of which are in the letter/alphabet section. Over the past few years I have noticed an increase (small, but an increase nonetheless) in the numbers of Orthdox families walking along 25A & Cedar St on the Sabbath.
To the OP: if your family is in Setauket and St James, you need a reasonable commute to Melville, you will do well looking into the fixer upper in Stony Brook. Also, as many others have mentioned -- Kings Park might be very well-suited to you, too.

Stony Brook and Kings Park are both excellent choices.

All Im saying regarding the mythology is that people frequently mistake Rocky Point for being further out than it is.
If its too far...then stay put.
I've yet to find its distance from anything unbearable.
In fact I find it to be pretty central.(hence 1 town north of Middle Island/60 miles out on a 120 mile island)
It all depends on where you spend your time.
You are entitled to your opinion but you are not entitled to your "cold hard" facts Strong Island.

I'm sure there's lots of things to love about the area. I just don't see the location as one of them.

...yet.
Rocky Point, Sound Beach and Ridge are some of the last few places to "get away from it all" within 60 Miles of NYC.
I wouldnt trade it for anyting.

Goy is the singular, Goyim is the plural and Goyische is the adverb.

If Rocky Point is really #1 on your list of places to live on LI...then congrats to you and yours.
To each his own.
I guess all those posts with the cheesey realtor speak like "best bang for your buck" and "best value on the north shore" were for our benefit. Thanks! lol...

SIB,
Such venom.
My point is we can afford most of the other Middle Class towns on LI.
There just arent too many left North of 25a with waterviews.
If money were no object, Id most likely choose The Hamptons.
Im proud of my lil podunk towm ...Im sorry if your not.
